Men’s Tennis Defeats Hastings College 9-0

Orlando, Fla. – The Wayne State men's tennis team recorded its second win in three days Monday night thanks to a 9-0 win over Hastings College. The victory gives WSU a record of 5-3.

For the third time this season, WSU won all three of its doubles matches to start Wayne State off with a 3-0 lead heading into singles play.

The pairings of sophomore Bertrand Moulin (Lyon, France) / graduate student Britton Steele (Novi, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) and freshman Oscar Gamarra (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Unidad Educativa Javier) / senior Kevin Turnbull (Shelby Twp., Mich./Warren De La Salle) both earned their fifth victories of the season in first and second doubles respectively. Moulin and Steele won 8-6 while Gamara and Turnbull were 8-4 winners.

For the first time this season, redshirt sophomore Will Nolan (Troy, Mich./Troy) and freshman Thomas Ducret (Paris, France)  teamed up and proceeded to produce great results, winning 8-4 over Andrew Huber and Grant Nagaki.

Five of the six WSU singles wins were of the straight set variety.

Moulin picked up his team-high 10th win of the season with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Tyler Benson. Moulin has now won his last three matches. Steele took his No. 2 singles match 6-3, 6-4 against Vinny Banda.

In the third singles flight, Ducret edged Christopher Ondrey 6-2, 6-0.

In the closest showdown of the day, Gamarra came back after dropping his first set against Brian Freeman 6-2 by claiming the second set 6-1 and then winning the tiebreaker 10-6. 
 
Senior Roberto Gomez (Comitan Chiapas, Mexico/Preparaforia del Estado de Comitan) and freshman Jon Groszek (Dearborn Heights, Mich./Divine Child) anchored the bottom of the Warriors' lineup with 6-0, 6-2 and 6-0, 6-0 wins.

The freshmen trio of Ducret, Gamarra and Groszek have combined for a 14-9 record this season in singles competition.

Wayne State will conclude its Florida trip on Tuesday against Hamilton at 12:00 p.m.
