Warriors Increase Lead At GLIAC Championships

Azambuja wins two conference titles

The Wayne State University women's swimming and diving team remains in first place after two days of competition at the GLIAC Championships.

Wayne State has a 103-point lead, 387-284, over Grand Valley State, up from WSU's 44-point advantage held through Wednesday. The Warriors also claimed conference titles in three events Thursday night.

Carol Azambuja became a two-time GLIAC champion in one evening, as she won the 200 individual medley and led off the first-place 200 freestyle relay.

The foursome of Azambuja, Ana Gonzalez Pena, Christina Busquets Garcia, and Sara Franklin posted an NCAA “A” cut time of 1:33.18 and broke both the school and GLIAC meet records. Azambuja also improved her “”B” cut in the 50 free with a leadoff time of 24.03.

Catherine Leix also earned a conference championship, the first of her career, in the 500 free (4:58.60). Alycen Wiacek came in third (5:01.71) and Stephanie Ekleberry finished sixth (5:06.81). Leix earned an NCAA "A" cut; Wiacek and Ekleberry improved their NCAA “B” times.

In the consolation final of the 500 free, Chelsea Lord finished 15th (5:22.69).

By the narrowest of margins, Franklin broke her own school record in the 50 free and missed breaking her own mark in the 100 backstroke.

Franklin finished third in the 50 free, improving her “B” cut (23.66) and breaking her record by .01 seconds. Gonzalez Pena came in fourth (24.02), while Busquets Garcia and Ashley Corriveau placed sixth (24.26) and seventh (24.27), respectively.

Leading off the second-place 400 medley relay, Franklin improved her 100 back “A” cut (54.26), but came up just .01 seconds short of her school record. Franklin, Gonzalez Pena, Azambuja and Corriveau also made an “A” cut in the relay (3:45.39).

Along with Azambuja, Kayla Scott also bested her “B” cut in the 200 IM, finishing fourth (2:08.42).

Four divers combined for 59 points on the one-meter board, led by Cassie Chetosky who finished second (416.15). Carly Sevald came in third (409.20), Paige Kortman took fourth (408.60) and Emily Mitzelfeld placed eighth (371.70).

The GLIAC Championships will continue with Friday morning's preliminary round.
