SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Wayne State women's swimming and diving team moved up three spots into second place after two days of the NCAA Championships.
Wayne State has 176 points through Thursday's events, 91 behind first-place Drury (267). Ashland is in third (152), closely followed by UC San Diego (151).
The Warriors broke school records in the 200 free and 400 medley relays, winning a national title and setting an NCAA meet record in the latter.
Just .06 seconds separated the top three teams in the 200 free relay.
Carol Azambuja,
Ana Gonzalez Pena,
Ashley Corriveau, and
Sara Franklin were third of that group behind Ashland and Drury, but nonetheless established a new school record (1:32.14). Azambuja also eclipsed Franklin's school mark in the 50 free (23.66) with her leadoff time of 22.97.
At the end of the night, though, the foursome of Franklin, Gonzalez Pena,
Agata Zalewska and Azambuja stood at the top of the medal stand, having broken the NCAA meet record in the 400 medley relay for the second time Thursday. After posting a preliminary time of 3:41.69 in the morning, they posted a first-place time of 3:40.45 in the evening.
Franklin also bested her own school record in the 100 backstroke twice Thursday in the prelims (53.78) and finals (52.90). Her leadoff time in the final also broke the NCAA meet record for the 100 back.
Wayne State accumulated 41 points in one-meter diving, led by
Cassie Chetosky who finished fourth (433.45).
Paige Kortman placed fifth (431.10) and
Carly Sevald came in seventh (419.50).
Zalewska finished 13th in the 100 butterfly (56.78), and
Catherine Leix came in 12th in the 200 free (1:52.08).
