Women's Swimming Remains In Second At NCAA Championships

Franklin, Gonzalez Pena earn national titles

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -
The Wayne State University women's swimming and diving team came away with two individual national titles Friday as the Warriors remained in second place overall at the NCAA Championships.

Wayne State has 252 points and trails defending champion Drury by 101 points (363). UC San Diego is in third (247). The Warriors have four NCAA titles over the last three days of the meet.

Sara Franklin won the 100 backstroke national championship for the second straight year (53.28), while Ana Gonzalez Pena, the 2010 runner-up in the 100 breaststroke, finished in first place Friday and broke the NCAA meet record (see video below from NCAA.com).

Gonzalez Pena (1:01.86) came in .02 seconds under the previous NCAA mark established by UCSD's Rosanna Delurgio in 2003. She also finished .03 seconds under Courtney Roberts' 2010 school record.

Kayla Scott placed second (1:02.09) for a one-two finish for Wayne State in the 100 breaststroke.

Catherine Leix finished fifth in the 500 freestyle (4:56.98), and Cristina Busquets Garcia came in 12th in the consolation final of the 100 backstroke (57.01).
