Men's Fencing Wins 8 of 9 Matches at Notre Dame Duals

Five student-athletes record at least 20 wins each.

Notre Dame, Ind. -- The 17th-ranked Wayne State University men's fencing team compiled an 8-1 record Sunday at the Notre Dame Duals to improve to 12-6 on the season.

The Warriors began the day with a 23-4 triumph over the Florida Gators and followed that with a 20-7 victory over Cleveland State.  In round three, WSU downed Detroit 21-6 before falling to fourth-ranked Notre Dame 22-5.  Wayne State rebounded to posts wins over Wisconsin (22-5), Iowa (25-2), Lawrence (23-4), Northwestern (16-11) and Indiana (21-6).

WSU's foil trio of senior Raffi Nersessian (Fort Wayne, Ind. / Culver Military Academy), and freshmen Quentin Schneider (Gonesse, France) and Zack Kaiser (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Stevenson) had a tremendous competition combining for a 70-11 record.  Schneider led the way with a 25-2 mark, while Nersessian went 23-4.  Kaiser was victorious in 22 of his 27 bouts.

The sabre quartet combined for a 59-22 record.  Freshman Keith Bizek (Dearborn, Mich. / Divine Child) had the most wins (22) against four losses, while sophomore Nick Silantyev (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) had a 20-2 record.  Jacob Dargis (Sterling Hts., Mich. / Stevenson) went 16-10, with Brennan Bearse (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich. / Grosse Pointe South) winning one of his seven bouts.

Eight different Warriors competed in epee action.  Senior Michael Ramlow (Midland, Mich.) led the way with a 19-6 record, while classmate Nathan Kumar (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / International Academy) had a 13-8 mark.  Both seniors recently switched from foil to epee to help the depth on the squad.

Both Darrin Winston (Redford, Mich. / Thurston) and Merlin Chappuis (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich. / Grosse Pointe South) won four bouts each, in 13 and six bouts, respectively. Matt Hoffman (Sterling Hts., Mich. / Warren Cousino) had a 3-0 record, while Ruub Jimmy (Troy, Mich. / Our Lady of Lourdes) went 3-4.

Evan Mason and Steven Kudla (Woodhaven, Mich. / Riverview Gabriel Richard) each competed in three bouts with Mason posting one victory.

Wayne State will travel to Evanston, Ill. this weekend for a Saturday Dual meet.
