Evanston, Ill. -- Four members of the Wayne State University men's fencing program competed in the Remenyik Open this past weekend hosted by Northwestern University.
Sophomore
Quentin Schneider (Gonesse, France), who was seeded 10th, placed third in the foil. He went 6-0 in pool play (+21 in touches) and received a first round bye in the direct elimination. He won his first bout 15-3 over Max Ulm, and then defeated Adam Barbanell, 15-7, in the round of 32. In the round of 16, Schneider dispatched Yaroslav Ivanov 15-3, then outscored Joseph Streb, Jr. 15-7 in the quarterfinals. Schneider was edged 15-14 in the semifinals by eventual champion George Haglund.
Sophomore
Hans Kaiser (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Stevenson), who was seeded 14th, placed fifth in the foil. He went 6-0 in pool play (+23 in touches) and received a first round bye in the direct elimination. He won his first bout 15-6 over Alden Grasse, and then defeated Josh Williams, 15-1, in the round of 32. In the round of 16, Kaiser dispatched Garrett Turley 15-7, then was edged 15-14 in the quarterfinals by eventual runner-up Christopher Monti.
Junior
Nick Silantyev (Tashkent, Uzbekistan), who was seeded fourth, placed sixth in the sabre. He went 6-0 in pool play (+16 in touches) and received a first round bye in the direct elimination. He won his first bout 15-6 over Andrew Kilbourne, and then defeated Thomas Burke, 15-12, in the round of 32. In the round of 16, Silantyev dropped a 15-13 decision to Benjamin Marcus.
Freshman
Adam Accica, who was seeded 29th, placed 41st in the sabre. He went 1-5 in pool play (-15 in touches) and suffered a 15-1 setback to Jacob Zeiss in the opening round of direct elimination.
Both Schneider and Kaiser will be competing in the USFA North American Cup this coming weekend in Virginia.
