Men's Fencing Wins One of Seven at Northwestern Duals

Quentin Schneider leads Warriors with 19-2 record.


Evanston, Ill. -- The 17th-ranked Wayne State University men's fencing squad went 1-6 Saturday at the Northwestern Duals, which included five matches against top-15 teams.

The Warriors began the NU Duals with a 22-5 setback against #5-Ohio State, then lost 24-3 to second-ranked Princeton.  No. 11 North Carolina upended WSU 17-10.  In the next round, eighth-ranked Duke defeated WSU 21-6.

Wayne State then recorded a 26-1 victory over Cal Tech, but lost back-to-back 17-10 matches to No. 13-Stanford and UC-San Diego.

The foilist led the way at Northwestern compiling a 35-28 mark.  Freshman Quentin Schneider (Gonesse, France) was outstanding recording a 19-2 mark with a 5-4 loss to Princeton's Marcus Howard and another 5-4 loss to Stanford's Turner Caldwell.  Both senior Raffi Nersessian (Fort Wayne, Ind. / Culver Military Academy) and freshman Zack Kaiser (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Stevenson) had 8-13 records.

A trio of sabre competitors combined for an 18-45 record.  Junior Nick Silantyev (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) had an 11-10 record, while freshman Keith Bizek (Dearborn, Mich. / Divine Child) went 5-16.  Junior Jacob Dargis (Sterling Hts., Mich. / Stevenson) had a 2-19 record.

Six Warrior fencers participated in the epee competition.  Leading the way with a 6-7 record was freshman Steven Kudla (Woodhaven, Mich. / Riverview Gabriel Richard).  Senior Michael Ramlow (Midland, Mich.) had a 5-9 mark, while a trio of WSU epeeist had a pair of victories each -- senior Ruub Jimmy (Troy, Mich. / Our Lady of Lourdes) went 2-4, senior Nathan Kumar (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / International Academy) went 2-6 and junior Darrin Winston (Redford, Mich. / Thurston) had a 2-8 record.  Sophomore Merlin Chappuis (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich. / Grosse Pointe South) had a 1-11 mark.

The Warriors (13-12 overall) will be off from competition until the U.S. Collegiate Fencing Championship at New York University on Feb. 26.
