JENISON, Mich. - After the first night of the 2012 GLIAC Swimming and Diving Championships, the Wayne State women's team opened up a
66-point lead and reclaimed its conference title in the 200 medley relay.
Through three events, Wayne State has 166 points, followed by Grand Valley State (100). Indianapolis is in third place (55).
The Warriors began the evening by accumulating 67 points in the 1000 freestyle. Leading the seven Warriors to finish among the top 16 was
Brittany Wilkins, who lost by just .77 seconds to GVSU's Carly Bush but improved her NCAA “B” qualifying times in both the 1000 (10:12.26) and the 500 (5:07.71).
Kaylee Dolinski finished fourth and
Alycen Wiacek came in sixth, both improving their “B” cuts as well (10:18.23; 10:32.46).
Earning “B” cuts were Marisa Swartz (10:33.17) and
Stephanie Ekleberry (10:39.71) who came in seventh and 12th, respectively.
Kelsey Dischler placed 14th (10:41.68) and
Heather Thomson finished 15th (10:48.03).
In women's three meter diving the Warriors occupied half of the group of finalists.
Paige Kortman finished second (418.20) while following closely behind was
Carly Sevald (417.90).
Emily Mitzelfeld came in fourth (402.75) and
Rachael LaCroix placed eighth (285.35).
Wayne State successfully defended its title in the 200 medley relay with an "A" cut time of 1:42.59.
Carol Azambuja and
Ashley Corriveau, who were both on last year's GLIAC-record setting relay, bookended Wednesday's foursome with
Kayla Scott and
Gloria Martinez Perez.
The GLIAC Swimming and Diving Championships will continue Thursday with prelims starting at 10:30 a.m.
