9-0 to #8 Rollins College.
In their first outdoor match of the season, the Warriors (6-5) struggled early at doubles in very warm and humid conditions, dropping the first two matches before senior
Matt Fisher (Shelby Twp., Mich./Eisenhower) and junior
Jon Groszek (Dearborn Heights, Mich./Divine Child) got WSU on track, defeating the Kohawks (12-3) duo of Sean Stokstad and Michael Janssen.
At singles, sophomore
Michael FitzGerald (Grosse Ile, Mich.) had the most dominant win for WSU with a 6-2, 6-2 decision over Stokstad at second singles. Sophomore
Melvin Joseph (Northville, Mich.), redshirt freshman
Jason Chen (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams), and Groszek were the other victors for the Warriors.
In the afternoon match-up against hosting Rollins College, the Tars (6-4) swept the Warriors.
At third doubles, the team of juniors
Oscar Gamarra (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Unidad Educativa Javier) and
Thomas Ducret (Paris, France) kept things close, falling 8-6 to the Rollins duo Malte Christesen and Lucas Jovita.
At fifth singles, Gamarra won the first game 7-6 (7-2) against, but a minor injury forced him to retire in game two with the score tied at three. Groszek also salvaged a setat sixth singles, winning 6-2, but he fell 6-1 in the second set and lost the third set tiebreaker 10-8.
The Warriors are in action Friday against Vincennes (Ind.) University in Orlando, Fla.
