Fencing Returns to Competition Saturday With Detroit Mercy Duals

The Wayne State University men's and women's fencing teams open up the dual portion of its schedule Saturday, competing in the Detroit Mercy Duals.

WSU will face Michigan State University, the University of Michigan, Oakland University, Cleveland State and Detroit Mercy in dual meets.

Several Warrior fencers have performed well in the first portion of the season. Four fencers were crowned 2012 Danosi Open champions on Dec. 2.

Junior Kaja Klodawska (Lodz, Poland) opened her 2012-13 season strong, winning both the Remenyik and Danosi Opens. Klodawska's win at the Danosi Open was the second victory in as many seasons at the Danosi. She had a 10-1 mark at the Remenyik.

Senior Olivia Dobbs (Detroit, Mich. / Farmington) finished her Danosi Open career undefeated, winning the women's foil for the fourth straight year. Dobbs also won the Remenyik Open, finishing 10-1 overall at the invitational.

Senior Nick Silantyev (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) earned a victory at the Danosi Open for the second straight season. Silantyev also went 8-1 at the Remenyik Open, picking up a fourth-place finish.

WSU sophomores Quentin Schneider (Gonesse, France) and Hans Kaiser (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Stevenson) finished 1-2, respectively, at the Danosi Open. Schneider also finished third at the Remenyik Open, recording a 10-1 mark. Kaiser placed fifth at the Remenyik going 8-2.

The Detroit Mercy Duals is the first of five dual meet competitions for the WSU fencing teams this semester.  Most of the dual meets come in February following the Warriors participation in the New York University Invitational on Jan. 27 against schools such as Columbia, St. John's, Yale and North Carolina to name a few.
