DURHAM, N.C. -- The Wayne State University men's fencing team competed at the Duke Duals on Saturday, dropping three matches against nationally ranked squads.
The Warriors were defeated in matches against No. 18 John Hopkins (19-8), No. 10 Duke (18-9) and No. 1 Penn State (21-6).
Junior
Darrin Winston (Redford, Mich. / Thurston) lead the Warriors with six wins in the men's epee. He finished the day 6-3 overall, collecting two wins in each match. Also for men's epeeists, junior
Merlin Chappuis (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich. / Grosse Pointe South) and sophomore
Steven Kudla (Woodhaven, Mich. / Riverview Gabriel Richard) each posted two wins for Wayne State.
Sophomore
Quentin Schneider (Gonesse, France) went 5-4 to pace the WSU men's foil squad. He went 2-1 twice in matches against John Hopins and the Blue Devils. Fellow sophomore
Hans Kaiser (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Stevenson) had two victories, both coming against Duke, for WSU men's foilists.
In the men's sabre, senior
Nick Silantyev (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) finished 5-4 to lead the Warriors. He had two wins each against John Hopkins and Duke and recorded another victory against Penn State. He also dropped a 5-4 decision to the Nittany Lions. Freshman
Adam Accica (St. Clair Shores, Mich. / Lakeview) posted a victory as well for WSU men's sabreists.
The Warriors have a weekend off from competition and next return to action on Feb. 23 at the Notre Dame Duals for their last regular season dual.
