SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The Wayne State University men's fencing team wrapped up its regular season by finishing 1-5 on Saturday at the Notre Dame Duals. WSU earned its victory in the opening match, defeating Detroit Mercy, 16-11.
The Warriors also lost to No. 14 Air Force (19-8), No. 2 Notre Dame (24-3), Northwestern (16-11), Cleveland State (17-10) and Lawrence (14-13).
Sophomore
Hans Kaiser (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Stevenson) posted a 14-4 mark to help lead the men's foilists at the Notre Dame Duals. Fellow sophomore
Quentin Schneider (Gonesse, France) finished 6-2, while freshman
Tyler Gace (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Cousino) earned three wins for the Warriors. WSU finished 25-29 overall as a foil unit.
Junior
Merlin Chappuis (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich. / Grosse Pointe South) and freshman
Michael Haas (Plainwell, Mich. / Plainwell) each tallied four wins for men's epeeists. Junior
Darrin Winston (Redford, Mich. / Thurston), sophomore
Steven Kudla (Woodhaven, Mich. / Riverview Gabriel Richard) and freshman
Matthew Hilton (Amherstburg, Ont. / St. Thomas of Villanova) all each recorded three victories as well in the epee.
Freshman
Adam Accica (St. Clair Shores, Mich. / Lakeview) had a 6-1 record to pace WSU in the men's sabre. Senior
Nick Silantyev (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) posted a 3-3 mark, while freshman
Adam Kessler (Highland, Mich. / Lakeland) notched five wins and sophomore
Evan Mason (Trenton, Mich. / Riverview Gabriel Richard) garnered three triumphs as well in the sabre.
The Warriors return to Notre Dame's campus on Saturday and Sunday for their conference tournament, the Midwest Fencing Conference Championships.
