NCAA Midwest Regional results
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Three Wayne State University men's fencers placed in the top 10 at the NCAA Midwest Regional competition, held Sunday at Notre Dame University. The Warriors had nine fencers in all that competed at the tournament.
Senior
Nick Silantyev (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) and sophomore
Quentin Schneider (Gonesse, France) each placed in the top five for WSU. Silantyev finished fourth in the sabre competition, while Schneider was fifth in the foil. Sophomore
Hans Kaiser was the second WSU foilist to place inside the top 10, finishing eighth out of 14 participants.
In the sabre, Silantyev placed fourth out of 14 competitors, finishing with a 10-3 record overall. He had a +23 indicator on the day. Freshman
Adam Accica (St. Clair Shores, Mich. / Lakeview) placed 11th at the tournament. He posted a 3-10 record.
Schneider recorded a mark of 9-4 during the tournament to lead the foilists. He had a +13 indicator. Kaiser went 7-6 during the tournament, which included a +9 indicator. Both fencers finished above their initial seeding.
WSU fielded five of the 20 men's epeeists in the Midwest Regional, the most of any team. Sophomore
Steven Kudla (Woodhaven, Mich. / Riverview Gabriel Richard) earned the top finish for the Warriors, placing 12th overall. Kudla went 7-12 overall.
Junior
Darrin Winston (Redford, Mich. / Thurston) finished win 14th, freshman
Michael Haas was 17th, junior
Merlin Chappuis (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich. / Grosse Pointe South) placed 18th and freshman
Matthew Hilton (Amherstburg, Ont. / St. Thomas of Villanova) earned 20th as well for WSU in the epee.
Winston recorded six victories, Haas and Chappuis each posted four wins and Hilton had two triumphs.
The Warrior fencers will await selections for the 2013 NCAA Fencing National Championships, which will be held March 21-22 in San Antonio, Texas.
