Men's Team Results
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The Wayne State University men's fencing team placed third out of 21 teams at the 2013 Midwest Fencing Conference Championships, held Sunday at the University of Notre Dame.
The Warriors earned 630 points total to finish behind champion Notre Dame (795) and runner-up Ohio State (780). WSU also finished third in the men's foil, also behind the Fighting Irish and the Buckeyes.
Wayne State had the sixth-ranked men's foil team heading into the team tournament. WSU won by a 5-2 margin against Indiana in the first round and 5-2 in the quarterfinals over No. 3 Michigan State. The foil team fell in the semifinals to Notre Dame, 5-2, but rebounded with a victory in the third place match over Chicago, 5-2.
Sophomore
Quentin Schneider (Gonesse, France) recorded a 10-2 mark to lead WSU men's foilists. He finished 3-0 against Chicago, Michigan State and Indiana. Sophomore
Hans Kaiser also had an impressive 7-1 record for WSU in the foil.
The Warrior men's sabre contingency was ranked No. 8 and won their first match, defeating Cleveland State 5-2. WSU lost to top-seeded Notre Dame in the quarterfinals, 5-2, then defeated Northwestern in a consolation match, 5-4. The sabreists fell to Chicago in the fifth place match, 5-4, to finish sixth.
Senior
Nick Silantyev (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) went 9-1 to lead the sabre trio. Freshman
Adam Accica (St. Clair Shores, Mich. / Lakeview) finished with three victories, while
Adam Kessler (Highland, Mich. / Lakeland) also had a triumph for WSU in the sabre.
WSU had the 10th-best men's epee squad entering the team competition and ultimately finished ninth out of 21 squads. Wayne State lost to seventh-ranked Michigan State, 5-4, in the first round, but came back to win three straight matches to place ninth. WSU defeated Case Western Reserve (5-2), Indiana (5-4) and Detroit Mercy (5-4).
Sophomore
Steven Kudla (Woodhaven, Mich. / Riverview Gabriel Richard) paced the epeeists, finishing with a record of 10-2. Juniors
Merlin Chappuis (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich. / Grosse Pointe South) and
Darrin Winston (Redford, Mich. / Thurston) each had a 4-6 mark, while freshman
Michael Haas (Plainwell, Mich. / Plainwell) also posted a win in the epee.
Wayne State finished fourth in the combined standings, compiling 1,335 points between the men's and women's teams. Notre Dame placed first (1,590), Ohio State was second (1,560) and Northwestern finished third (1,350).
Several of the fencers next compete Sunday, March 10 in the NCAA Midwest Regional Fencing Championships, also held at Notre Dame.
