SOUTH BEND, Ind. --
Quentin Schneider and
Hans Kaiser each placed in the top 10 for the Wayne State University men's fencing team on Saturday during the individual portion of the 2014 Midwest Fencing Conference Championships, held at the University of Notre Dame.
The two-day conference championships wrap up Sunday with the team competition. WSU had nine men's fencers participate in the individual competition on Saturday.
Schneider (Gonesse, France) medaled, placing third, while Kaiser (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Stevenson) was ninth in the men's foil.
Nate Miller (Hopkinton, Mass. / Hopkinton) made it three WSU foilists in the top 15 as he placed 13th for the Warriors.
Schneider, seeded No. 2 entering the championships, cruised his way to the quarterfinals, winning by scores of 15-2, 15-7 and 15-5. He earned his way into the semifinals with an 15-12 victory over No. 7 Hazem Kazhbak of Notre Dame.
In the semifinals, Schneider fell 14-13 to Ohio State's Andrew McDonald.
Kaiser was ranked No. 6 out of 68 foilists entering the day. He defeated teammate
Zachary Shoen (Port Huron, Mich. / Port Huron) in the round of 64, 15-6, before winning over Stephen Varda in the round of 32. Kaiser also fenced in a tighly-contested match against McDonald, falling 15-13 in the round of 16.
Miller cruised through his pool play, winning all six bouts, while recording a +23 indicator (30 touches scored, seven touches received). Seeded No. 14 entering direct elimination, Miller won his first two bouts by scores of 15-3 and 15-8 before falling 15-6 to third-seeded Zain Shaito of Ohio State in the round of 16.
Shoen went 1-5 during pool play in his first MFC Championships and finished 59th overall.
Tyler Gace (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Cousino) also recorded a 1-5 mark during pool play and went on to place 57th overall in the foil.
In the epee,
Michael Haas (Plainwell, Mich. / Plainwell) led the Warriors with a 25th-place finish out of 80 competitors.
Merlin Chappuis (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich. / Grosse Pointe South) and
Steven Kudla (Woodhaven, Mich. / Riverview Gabriel Richard) each placed in the top half for WSU, earning 34th and 35th, respectively.
Chappuis cruised through pool play, going 6-0 and recording a +15 indicator. Kudla finished 6-1 with a +13 indicator, while Haas had a 4-1 mark.
In the direct elimination bracket, Haas defeated Indiana's David Sirkin in the first round before falling to third-seeded Bill Meyer of Ohio State, 15-9. Meyer would go on the reach the championship bout. Chappuis and Kudla each lost in their first round bouts during direct elimination.
Matthew Hilton (Amherstburg, Ont. / St. Thomas of Villanova) fenced for the Warriors in the sabre and performed well, also placing in the top half of competitors. He finished in a tie for 30th out of 64 fencers in the sabre.
Hilton went 3-3 during pool play (+2 indicator) and won his round of 64 bout over a higher seed, beating Iowa's Christopher Edwards, 15-11. Hilton was defeated, 15-5, in the next round to seventh-seeded Ian Dwyer of Notre Dame.
Wayne State will perform in the team competition Sunday in South Bend, Ind.
