ASHLAND, Ohio – The Wayne State University women's swimming and diving squad defeated Ashland, 164-125, in its first GLIAC meet of the 2015-16 season on Saturday afternoon at Messerly Natatorium. The Warriors placed first in eight of 16 events, seven individual and one relay.
RELAYS- Junior
Emily Maraskine (Midland, Mich. / Dow), senior
Hannah Loesch (Pensacola, Fla.), freshman
Delayni Kornak-Kotarba (Comstock Park, Mich. / Rockford) and sophomore
Makayla Myers (Hudsonville, Mich.) placed first in the 200 medley relay with a mark of 1:50.25.
- The quartet of juniors
Brenna Gabrielson (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) and
Emily Heitchue (Royal Oak, Mich.) and freshmen
Lezlie Bueno Estrada (Montes Urales, Mexico) and
Dani Kudla (Lake Orion, Mich.) finished third in the 200 medley relay (1:52.39).
- WSU also had four relay teams compete in the 200 freestyle relay as exhibition.
INDIVIDUAL- The Warriors took the top-3 places in the 1000 freestyle. Freshman
Ellie Dean (Midland, Mich. / Dow) recorded a first-place finish with a time of 10:51.16, while senior
Kaylee Dolinski (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) finished the race in 11:02.50 in second place with classmate
Veronica Loock (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) placing third (11:07.33).
- Freshman
Tai Furnari (Pleasant Ridge, Mich. / Ferndale) won the 200 butterfly with a mark of 2:12.48. Classmate
Hannah Berich (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams) finished second (2:17.88) and sophomore
Skyler Muzichuk (Clinton Twp., Mich. / International Academy of Macomb) placed fourth (2:18.73).
- Bueno Estrada swam a 24.25 to a first-place finish in the 50 freestyle. The freshman also was victorious in the 100 freestyle with a time of 53.06, while sophomore
Meghan Lamb (East China, Mich. / St. Clair) finished third in 54.16.
- Kollen garnered a first-place finish in the 500 freestyle with a mark of 5:18.02, while Dolinski finished third in a time of 5:25.99.
- Junior
Elizabeth Rawlings (Armada, Mich. / Romeo) won both diving events with a mark of 300.90 in the 1-meter and 302.20 in the 3-meter. Senior
Alex Geddis-McCririe (Brighton, Mich.) placed second in both events, while junior
Holly Krill (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Portage Central) finished third. All three divers qualified for the NCAA Pre-Qualifying Meet. Rawlings qualified for the 1-meter diving, while Geddis-McCririe tallied scored to qualify in both diving events. Krill also qualified for the 3-meter diving.
- Lamb garnered a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle with a mark of 1:57.27, followed by freshmen
Morgan Kollen (Zeeland, Mich. / West) with a time of 2:00.83 and
Emily Marginean (Tecumseh, Ont. / Riverside S.S.) finishing in 2:02.88.
- Maraskine finished as the runner-up in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:01.38, while Gabrielson and sophomore
Abi Johns (Holland, Mich.) placed third (1:02.09) and fourth (1:03.51), respectively. Maraskine also finished second in the 200 backstroke (2:15.15), while Marginean (2:16.07) and Gabrielson (2:17.40) both improved their times from last week.
- In the 100 breaststroke, Loesch touched the finish line in second place (1:09.33), and Heitchue posted a time of 1:09.47 to finish third. Loesch also posted a mark of 2:30.67 in the 200 breaststroke to claim second place.
- Kornak-Kotarba recorded a time of 1:00.76 for second place in the 100 butterfly with Myers finishing in third with a mark of 1:00.95.
UP NEXT- WSU will travel to Grand Rapids, Mich. to take on Division III opponent Calvin on Nov. 20 at the Venema Aquatic Center. The meet is slated for 5 p.m. The Warriors bested the Knights, 136-96, last season.
