ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Former Wayne State fencer Michael Cho won the Vet-40 men's foil national title last week (July 3rd) at the 2018 USA Fencing Nationals.

The eighth-seeded Cho, competing for the Renaissance Fencing Club of Detroit, went 3-3 in pool play but was +6 (26-20) in touches. One of his setbacks was a 5-4 bout to top-seeded Peter Habala.

Cho was seeded 12th for the direct elimination portion of the competition.  He defeated Robert Braunschweig 10-4 in the round of 32.  In the round of 16, Cho recorded a 10-8 victory over Shawn Smith.  He upended Leon Sanchez, 10-3, in the quarterfinals before posting a 10-6 triumph over top-seeded Nathan Anderson in the semifinals.  Cho won the gold medal bout by a 10-4 score over Rafael Suarez, who had defeated Habala 10-7 in the other semifinal bout.

Habala, Suarez and Anderson were the only three foilists to compile a 6-0 mark during pool play.

Cho was an Honorable Mention All-American with a 12th-place finish at the 1993 NCAA Championships as a senior for the Tartars.
