Two Fencers Compete In African Championships

Ahmed Elsayed placed third at the African Championships.

DETROIT -- A current Wayne State University fencer and a former All-American sabreist competed this past week at the African Championships held in Bamako, Mali.

Epeeist Ahmed Elsayed represented Egypt and finished third out of 41 competitors.

Elsayed won his pool with a 6-0 record and was +19 (30-11) in touches. His lone 5-4 victory was over Mohamed Cherif Kraria of Algeria.

As the second seed for direct elimination, Elsayed posted a 15-3 triumph over Samba Abubakari Alhassan of Ghana. He defeated Kraria for a second time, 15-10, to advance to the quarterfinals.

Elsayed upended Bourama Keba Sagnan of Senegal 15-5, before falling 15-9 to eventual champion Houssam Elkord of Morocco in the semifinals.

In the team Epee competition, Elsayed helped lead Eqypt to the team title. After an opening round bye as the No. 1 seed, Egypt defeated Senegal, 44-36, followed by a 45-27 triumph over the Republic of South Africa in the championship bout.

Former Warrior All-American Ziad Elsissy placed sixth out of 34 participants in the men's sabre.

He began pool play with a 5-1 record and was +16 (26-10) in touches. His only setback was a 5-1 decision to Fares Ferjani of Tunisia.

Elsissy was seeded fifth for direct elimination and began with a bye in the round of 32. He defeated Lokman Benmarouf of Algeria 15-8 followed by a 15-11 setback to Ferjani, who ended up advancing to the gold medal bout.

In the team Sabre competition, Elsissy helped lead Eqypt to the team title. After an opening round bye as the No. 1 seed, Egypt defeated Nigeria, 45-8, followed by a 45-29 triumph over Senegal in the championship bout.
