WSU Fencer Elsayed Earns Silver Medal At African Championships

Wayne State University fencer Ahmed Elsayed (Tanta, Gharbia, Egypt) finished second in the men's epee competition at the 2019 African Games held last week in Morocco.

Elsayed went 5-0 in pool play out-touching his opponents by a combined 25-5 score.

In the opening round of the direct elimination, Elsayed posted a 15-7 triumph over Taya Kouadio of the Ivory Coast.  In the quarterfinals, Elsayed was a 15-5 victor over Libya's Abdussalam Abujtela.

Elsayed defeated Egypt's Mohammed Yasseen 15-5 in the semifinals, before being edged 15-14 in the gold medal match by Morocco's Houssam El Kord.

Elsayed did win a gold medal in the men's team epee competition as Egypt defeated Ivory Coast (45-26), Libya (45-26) and Morocco (45-43).
