Men's Swim and Dive Holds On To Second Place After Day Three of GLIACs

Franz Mueller placed first in the 100 back with an NCAA "B" cut time.

HOLLAND, Mich. -- The Wayne State University men's swimming and diving team is in second place after the third day of the 2021 GLIAC Championships, which is being held at the Holland Community Aquatic Center.
 
The Warriors totaled 549 points after three days and trail Grand Valley State, who leads with 829.5 points.  Behind WSU are Northern Michigan (417.5), St. Cloud State (309.5), Saginaw Valley State (255), Davenport (236), and Ashland (97).
 
The highlight of day three for WSU was redshirt junior Franz Mueller (Brandenburg, Germany) placing first in the 100 back with a NCAA "B" time of 48.15.
 
Also, in the 100 back "A" finals was sophomore Luka Cvetko (Varazdin, Croatia) tying for sixth (49.84) and freshman Brody Jamieson (Farmington, Mich.) finishing in eighth (48.85).
 
In the 500 free, sophomore Casey Dolen (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Dexter) placed sixth (4:37.55).
 
The two Warriors in the 500 free consolation finals were sophomore Matt Vassilakos (Clarkston, Mich.) and freshman Marko Vucelic (Wixom, Mich. / Walled Lake Western).  Vassilakos placed 11th (4:39.05) and Vucelic finished 12th (4:39.08).
 
In the 100 breast, sophomore Hans Anderson (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) had an NCAA "B" time and finished third (55.17).
 
In the consolation final of the 100 breast, graduate student Hussain Alzaid (Kuwait City, Kuwait) placed 11th (57.82).
 
In the 200 fly, freshman Alex Capizzo (Fraser, Mich.) placed third (1:47.93) and freshman Michael Wolsek (Trenton, Mich.) finished fourth (1:50.06).  Both earned an NCAA "B" qualifying time. Junior Christopher Westgate (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams) placed eighth (1:55.71).
 
In the 200 fly consolation final, sophomore Josh Mahaney (Saline, Mich.) placed ninth (1:54.23) and Vassilakos earned a 13th-pace finish (1:56.52).
 
In the one-meter diving competition, freshman Alex Brent (Lake Orion, Mich.) had a NCAA "B" score and placed second (458.55 points).
 
WSU finished second in the 800 free relay (6:47.34).  The quartet consisted of Cvetko, Wolsek, Capizzo, and Dolen.

Wayne State will be competing in the GLIAC Championships through Saturday evening.
