Men's Swim and Dive Places Second At GLIAC Championships

WSU finished first with an NCAA "B" qualifying time in the 400 free relay.

HOLLAND, Mich. -- The Wayne State University men's swimming and diving team finished in second place after the fourth and final day of the 2021 GLIAC Championships, which was held at the Holland Community Aquatic Center.
 
Grand Valley State won the conference title with a total of 1072.5 points.  WSU finished in second with 728.5 points ahead of Northern Michigan (567.5), St. Cloud State (402.5), Saginaw Valley State (319), Davenport (291), and Ashland (139).
 
The highlight of day four for WSU was in the 100 free with junior Franz Mueller (Brandenburg, Germany) placing first (43.95), sophomore Luka Cvetko finishing second (44.10), and freshman Michael Wolsek (Trenton, Mich.) placing third (44.69), while senior Jack Rogers (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Portage Central) placed fifth (45.26), and freshman Brody Jamieson (Farmington, Mich.) finished in seventh (45.77).  Mueller, Cvetko, Wolsek, and Rogers all had NCAA "B" qualifying times.
 
In the 1650 free, freshman Marko Vucelic (Wixom, Mich. / Walled Lake Western) placed eighth (16:23.42), finishing next was junior Chris Westgate (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams) in 12th (16:36.09).
 
In the 200 back consolation final, junior Chris Spencer (Jackson, Mich. / Lumen Christi Catholic) finished 11th (1:55.36), while senior Tristan Fraley (St. Clair, Mich.) was 15th (1:56.39).
 
In the 200 breast, freshman Alex Capizzo (Fraser, Mich.) placed third (2:00.46), and graduate student Hussain Alzaid (Kuwait City, Kuwait) finished eighth (2:07.62).
 
WSU finished first in the 400 free relay and also posted an NCAA "B" qualifying time (2:57.90).  The group consisted of Mueller, Jamieson, Cvetko, and Rogers.
 
UP NEXT
The Warriors will await word on how many have qualified to compete at the NCAA Championships on March 17-20 at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Alabama.
