Former Fencer Elsissy Impressive At Budapest World Cup

Elsissy finished 12th as an individual and helped Egypt to three wins in team competition.

BUDAPEST, Hungary -- Former Wayne State University All-American fencer Ziad Elsissy competed this past weekend at the Sabre World Cup competition.  Out of 190 sabreist participating, Elsissy finished 12th.

He began the event by going 6-0 in pool play and was +17 (30-13) in touches to finish tied-for-third.  Five of his six victories were by the identical 5-2 scores, while his other triumph was 5-3 over Bruno Pekelman of Brazil.  The 5-2 wins came against Alin Badea (Romania), Krystof Cacek (Czech Republic), Marcin Lipinski (Poland), Jose Quintero (Venezuela) and Jonghyun Lee (Korea).

In the direction elimination table, Elsissy defeated Italy's Dario Cavaliere 15-11 in the round of 64.  After defeating Korea's Bongil Gu 15-12 in the round of 32, Elsissy fell to Russia's Kamil Ibragimov 15-12 in the round of 16 to finish 12th.  Gu was the world champion in 2014, 2015 and 2017 and currently rated ninth in the world.

In the team competition on Sunday, Elsissy along with teammates Mohamed Amer, Medhat Moataz and Mohab Samer began the competition seeded ninth.

Egypt defeated No. 24 Brazil 45-20 in the round of 32.  Egypt lost to eighth-seeded Iran 45-41 in the round of 16.  In its first match in the consolation round (9-16), Egypt was edged by Argentina 45-44.  Egypt bounced back to defeat Japan (45-35) and Spain (45-35) to finish 13th.

Elsissy, who will be heading to the Olympics as the Egyptian sabre squad has qualified for the team competition, will serve as the team captain in Tokyo.
