Men's Golf Finishes Sixth at Doc Spragg Invitational

FINDLAY, Ohio -- The Wayne State University men's golf program concluded competition at the Doc Spragg Fall Invitational hosted by Findlay on Tuesday afternoon.  The Warriors shot a 880 (294, 287, 299) and placed sixth in the 18-team field.  The 54-hole event is being played at the Findlay Country Club (Par 72 / 6,747 Yards).

LEADING THE WAY
Garret Day (Chatham, Ont. / Ursuline College Chatham) led the Green & Gold with a 218 (74, 70, 74) and tied-for-20th.

THE FIELD
UIndy shot a 851 to win the team trophy, while UMSL (867) was second with Findlay (869) finishing third.  Tiffin (874) was fourth and Grand Valley State (877) placed fifth, three strokes better than the Warriors.  WSU edged Walsh (882) by a stroke and bested the Findlay B-team (884), Northwood (886) and Ashland (886).

WSU RESULTS
Sean Niles (Northville, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central) posted a 220 (72, 74, 74), and tied-for-27th.

Josh DiCarlo (Amherstburg, Ont. / General Amherst) carded a 221 (72, 72, 77), while Matt Pelak (Mattawan, Mich.) finished with a 223 (76, 71, 76).

Mat Hawryluk (Chatham, Ont. / Ursuline College Chatham) rounded out the starting five with a 230 (76, 77, 75).

HEAD COACH THOUGHTS
"After a very rough start for the Warriors. we rebounded in the middle of the round and kind of righted the ship," said head coach Mike Horn.  "Overall, we had decent scoring by everybody, but nobody played really well.  We had some important wins even though a sixth place is not our standard.  We need to continue to work on our par five scoring.  Our scrambling also needs some work.  But I'm very proud of how they hung in there after an awful start.  With the strong winds and the tough conditions, it would've been easy to mail it in today but they did not!  We've got to continue to get better.  We are 27-11 after the first three weeks. That's a decent start but we've got to finish the fall stronger than that."

UP NEXT
Wayne State will compete at the Kyle Ryman Memorial Invitational at Mohawk CC on Oct. 4-5 in Tiffin, Ohio.
