Several Men's Fencers Participate at The Ohio State Open

Marouf advanced to the Gold Medal bout in the men's sabre competition.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Several members of the Wayne State University men's fencing program competed at the 2022 Ohio State open held at the OSU French Field House on Saturday, October 29th.

In the men's epee competition, redshirt senior Ahmed Elsayed (Tanta, Gharbia, Egypt) breezed through pool play going 6-0 with a +21 in touches (30-9) to earn the No. 1 seed for direct elimination.  After a bye in the table of 64, Elsayed won 15-10 in the round of 32, before being upset 15-10 in the round of 16 by Paul Veltrup of Ohio State to finish ninth.

Senior Ramadan Dinkins (Chicago, Ill.) won three of his six bouts during pool play and was +4 (24-20) in touches.  As the No. 31 seed, Dinkins won three straight direction elimination bouts with victories by the scores of 15-8, 15-10 and 15-10, before falling in the quarterfinals to place eighth.

Freshman Sam Garrett (San Francisco, Calif.) went 4-2 in pool play and was +2 (23-21) in touches.  He was seeded 25th for direct elimination, winning his first two bouts 15-11 and 15-12, prior to being upended by Veltrup 15-11 to finish sixth.

Bryce Heim (Oconomowoc, Wis.), a freshman, compiled a 4-2 record in pool play and was +9 (27-18) in touches.  He won his first two bouts in direction elimination by scores of 15-8 and 15-13, before falling to teammate Ramadan Dinkins 15-10 in the round of 16 to place 16th.

Rookie George Varin (Perm, Russia) won four of his five pool bouts and was +5 in touches (23-18) to receive the 14th seed.  He posted a 15-3 victory in his opening bout of direct elimination, but dropped a 15-9 decision in the table of 32 to finish 20th.

Freshman Cameron King (Laurel, Md. / DeMatha Catholic) compiled a 4-2 record (+4 in touches / 25-21) during pool play to earn the No. 23 seed for direct elimination.  After posting a 15-14 win in the round of 64, King fell 15-9 in the table of 32 to finish 23rd.

Newcomer Shuayb Dinkins (Kissimmee, Fla.) went 2-4 in pool play and was -7 in touches (17-24).  As the 43rd seed, Dinkins pulled the upset in the table of 64 with a 15-9 triumph over Sanil MIttal, but lost 15-14 in the round of 32 to finish 30th. 

In the men's foil event, senior Quinlyn Morgan (Olathe, Kan.) went 3-2 in pool play and was +1 (17-16) in touches.  In the round of 64, he defeated teammate Mitchell Gatrell 15-12, but lost 12-15 in the round of 32 to finish 26th.

Senior Skylar Pitcher (Middleville, Mich. / Thornapple Kellogg), competing unattached, went 4-1 in pool play and was +12 (24-12) in touches.  He posted a 15-8 triumph in the round of 64, before being edged 15-13 in the table of 32 to place 19th.

Sophomore Bobbie Hirsch (Huntington Woods, Mich.) compiled a 2-3 mark in pool play and was -5 (16-21) in touches.  After a bye in the round of 128, Hirsch's opponent in the table of 64 had a medical withdraw.  He dropped a 15-7 decision in the round of 32 to finish 32nd.

Freshman Mitchell Gatrell (Livonia, Mich. / Churchill) finished the competition with a 3-3 record.  He went 3-2 in pool play and was +3 (21-18) in touches.  After a bye in the round of 128, he fell to teammate Quinlyn Morgan 15-12 in the table of 64 to place 39th.

WSU alumnus Hans Kaiser won his first eight bouts in the men's foil event.  He compiled a 6-0 mark in pool play and was +17 (30-13) in touches.  After an opening round (128) bye, he posted back-to-back victories in direct elimination by scores of 15-1 and 15-10, before falling 15-12 in the round of 16 to finish 10th.

Sophomore Eyad Marouf ( Alexandria, Egypt) had an outstanding performance in the men's sabre competition.  He compiled a 5-0 mark and was +19 (25-6) during pool play.  In the direct elimination, portion of the event, Marouf won four consecutive bouts (15-4, 15-6, 15-8 and 15-12) to reach the finals where he fell 15-7 to Ohio State's Roscoe Swartz.

Freshman Jacob Bloom (Redford, Mich.) went 1-5 during pool play and was -20 (7-27) in touches.  He lost 15-7 in the round of 64 to finish 38th.

Wayne State will host an Alumni Meet on Saturday, November 12th, followed by the Danosi Open on November 13th.
