DETROIT -- The Wayne State University fencing program hosted the annual Danosi Open on Sunday at the Matthaei with the Warriors winning five medals, including two student-athletes who placed first in their weapon.

In the mixed (men's and women's combined) sabre event, sophomore Eyad Marouf (Alexandria, Egypt) won the gold medal.  Freshman Jacob Bloom (Redford, Mich. / Pinckney) placed 22nd out of 34 participants.

Freshman George Varin (Perm Russia) took first place in the men's epee competition, while teammate Sam Garrett (San Francisco, Calif.) tied-for-third.  Freshman Shuayb Dinkins (Kissimmee, Fla.) finished fifth.  Newcomer Cameron King (Laurel, Md.) placed 11th, with senior Ramadan Dinkins (Chicago, Ill.) and freshman Bryce Heim (Oconomowoc, Wis.) finishing 15th and 19th, respectively out of 32 participants.

Wayne State alum Hans Kaiser won the men's foil event, while current Warrior Quinlyn Morgan (Olathe, Kan. Homeschooled / Olathe East) was the runner-up.  Senior Skylar Pitcher (Middleville, Mich. Thornapple Kellogg) tied-for-third, while freshman Mitchell Gatrell (Livonia, Mich. / Churchill) placed fifth.  Sophomore Bobbie Hirsch (Huntington Woods, Mich. International Academy / Berkley) finished 13th out of 27 participants.
