Women's Swimming/Diving In First Place After Opening Day of GLIACs

Brunner wins the 50 Free; WSU takes first in 200 Free Relay

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's swimming and diving squad is in first place after day one of the 2022 GLIAC Championships being held at Gerstacker Regional Aquatic Center.

TEAM STANDINGS
Wayne State leads with 203.5 points, while Grand Valley State is close behind at 201.5 points. Northern Michigan is third (187) and is followed by Saginaw Valley State (101) and Davenport (100).

200 INDIVIDUAL MEDLEY
Graduate student Jia Yi Koh (Subang Jaya, Malaysia) placed fourth with a time of 2:06.46, improving on her prelims time, to earn 15 points.

Junior Maddy Chorley (Burton, Mich. / Davison) finished 11th (2:09.69), while freshman Megan Elmquist (Davison, Mich.) was 13th (2:10.23).  The duo earned 10 additional points for the Warriors.

50 FREE
Wayne State had three of the top four finishers in the event led by senior Julia Brunner (Traverse City, Mich. / St. Francis), who took first place in a time of 23.80.  junior Marina Tarlev (Athens, Greece) tied-for-second (23.89), while freshman Sabine Branford (Plymouth, Mich. / Salem) placed fourth (23.94).  All three had "B" cut times.

In the consolation finals, the WSU trio of freshman Evie Dice (Waterford, Mich. / Clarkston), sophomore Hannah Gurecki (Macomb, Mich. / L'Anse Creuse North), and rookie Hailee Waters (Dexter, Mich.) finished 10th (23.96), 11th (24.17) and 12th (24.24), respectively.

1000 FREE
Junior Jordan Fox (Melbourne, Australia), the top seed, finished second in the timed final clocking with a "B" cut time of 10:20.46.  Sophomore Barbara Munoz (Yumbo, Colombia) placed fifth (10:28.25).

Sophomore Isidora Sekaric's (Windsor, Ont. / W.F. Herman Academy) morning time of 10:39.44 held up for 13th place.

200 MEDLEY RELAY
The Warrior quartet of Chorley, Koh, Brunner and Tarlev finished second with a "B" cut time of 1:42.53, just .04 behind NMU.

200 FREE RELAY
WSU's contingent of Munoz, Tarlev, Brunner and Branford claimed the GLIAC title with a "B" cut time of 1:34.09.

UP NEXT
Saturday's prelims will consist of the 100 fly (Brunner is the top seed), 400 IM, 200 Free, women's three-meter diving and the 400 medley relay (WSU is the top seed).
