Ahmed Elsayed Secures NCAA Championship Spot

The redshirt junior finished second in the epee on Saturday.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Wayne State University men's fencing team continued its season at the NCAA Regionals on Saturday at Ohio State. Ahmed Elsayed (Tanta, Gharbia, Egypt) highlighted the results by finishing second in the epee and punching his ticket to the NCAA Championships.

Twenty-seven (27) NCAA Championship bids were on the line during this one-day competition as 60 percent of each fencer's season score is determined at this event. The other 40 percent is based on competition during the school year.

Competing at OSU on Saturday, in addition to the host Buckeyes and the Warriors, were Cleveland State (men and women), Denison (women only), Detroit Mercy (men and women), Lawrence University (men and women), Northwestern (women only), and Notre Dame (men and women).

SABRE RESULTS
Eyad Marouf (Alexandria, Egypt) finished fifth overall after going 8-4 with a +17 (51-34) advantage in touches.

EPEE RESULTS
Elsayed went 11-5 with a +15 (70-55) total touch score. Three of his defeats wer by just one point. He compiled a 3-2 mark and was +3 (21-18) in touches during the initial pool round, then went 8-3 with a +12 (49-37) in the final round.

FOIL RESULTS
Quinlyn Morgan (Olathe, Kan. / Homeschooled / Olathe East) placed ninth overall after going 5-8 with a -10 (42-52) touch differential.

UP NEXT
The NCAA will announce the selections to the National Collegiate Fencing Championships on March 15th via an NCAA.com release. Each of the four regions nationally (Mid-Atlantic/South, Midwest, West and Northeast) receive a set amount of bids per weapon per gender with two national at-large bids per weapon per gender also being awarded. The breakdown of the bids for the Midwest Region is as follows: (women's foil- 5, women's epee - 4, women's saber - 5, men's foil - 4, men's epee - 5, men's saber - 4).
