Women's Track Teams Have Successful Meets In Ohio and Texas

Taylor won the javelin event.

CEDARVILLE, Ohio -- Most of the Wayne State University women's outdoor track and field squad headed to the Yellow Jacket Collegiate Outdoor Open hosted by Cedarville University on Saturday.

JAVELIN
Senior Izzy Taylor (Three Rivers, Mich.) won the event with a personal-best mark of 30.66m, which came on her first attempt.  Her distance of 100-07 was the sixth-best in program history.  Classmate Teanna McCuaig (Sparta, Mich. / Kent City) finished fourth with a personal-best toss of 26.98m, which also came on her first attempt.  McCuaig's throw of 88-06 was the ninth-best in school history.

HAMMER
Senior Kaleigh Flowers (Grand Rapids, Mich. / East Kentwood) finished seventh with a best toss of 43.98m (144-03), which came on her first attempt.  Junior MaKayla Rawls (Detroit, Mich. / Birmingham Seaholm) posted the seventh-best mark in school history with a throw of 43.52m (142-09).  Her second attempt helped Rawls place eighth.  Taylor finished 12th with a distance of 40.96m (134-04), which came on her first attempt.  McCuaig's best throw also came on her first attempt with a mark of 34.66m.

DISCUS
Two top-10 all-time marks were achieved in the discus.  Freshman Jasmine Correa (West Olive, Mich. / Holland West Ottawa) posted the fourth-best mark in program history as her first attempt went for 38.32m (125-08) to help her finish eighth.  Rawls notched the seventh-best throw in school history with a distance of 35.60m (116-09) on her first attempt to finish ninth.  Sophomore Kaylee Price (Brownsburg, Ind.) tied-for-14th with a toss of 32.04m (105-01) on her first attempt.

SHOT PUT
Correa finished seventh with a best toss of 11.08m (36-04.25), while Flowers was eighth (10.87m) and Price finished ninth (10.52m).

1500M RUN
Freshman Emily Gordon (Northville, Mich.) led a quartet of Warriors finishing fifth in a time of 4:59.11.  Junior Charlene Yarema (Romeo, Mich.) crossed the finish line in 5:01.06 for ninth place, while freshman Reagan Justice (Canton, Mich. / Salem) placed 12th (5:04.13).  Sophomore Emily Esker (Livonia, Mich. / Franklin) had a time of 5:21.28.

5000M
Senior Ashley Defrain (Fort Gratiot, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) led the Wayne State contingent with a fifth-place finish in a time of 18:13.73, which was ninth-fastest in program history.  Junior Katherine Ray (Novi, Mich.) posted the 10th-fastest time in school history (18:19.45) to finish seventh.  Junior Thailyia Christensen (Flushing, Mich.) placed 12th (18:38.20), while freshman Mattie Drennan (Clarkston, Mich.) was 13th (18:52.53).  Rounding out the Warrior quintet was freshman Robin Bresolin (LaSalle, Ont.), who crossed the finish line in 19:39.03.

TEAM SCORES
Findlay won the meet with 135 points and was followed by Cedarville (125), Hillsdale (108), Walsh (97), Wright State (56.5) and WSU (44).  Trailing the Warriors were Northwood (29), Shawnee State (19), Mount Vernon Nazarene (16) and Lake Erie (10) and Berea (10).  Nine schools totaled nine or less points.

SAN MARCOS, Texas -- Three members of the WSU women's track squad competed at the Texas State Bobcat Invitational on Saturday.

A day after breaking her own school record in the 100m dash, junior Makayla Sumrall (Roseville, Mich.) accomplished the feat again on Saturday.  She finished third by clocking in at 11.79.  Senior Aliyah McDonald (Kingston, Jamaica) recorded her best 100m dash time since 2019 running 12.28, which tied-for-20th.

McDonald placed 37th in the 100m hurdles with a time of 15.30.

Junior Mikayla Williams (St. Charles, Mich.) finished 22nd in the triple jump with a best distance of 11.43m, which was the second-best by Williams as a collegian, and the sixth-best ever by a Warrior counting multiple performances by the same individual.

Williams tied-for-19th in the high jump at a height of 1.55m (5-01.00), clearing the bar on her first attempt.

UP NEXT
The Warriors will compete next Friday and Saturday at the University of Cincinnati Oliver Nikoloff Invite.
