Men's Golf Places Sixth at Findlay Spring Invite

Matt Pelak led WSU and finished tied-for-12th.

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The Wayne State University men's golf concluded play in its second to last regular season Spring tournament at the Findlay Spring Invitational on Tuesday.  The Warriors finished in sixth place with a team score of 872 (291, 284, 297).  The two-day, 54-hole event was played at the Big Blue Golf Course (Par 72, 6,859 Yards) in Lexington, Ky.

LEADING THE WAY
Grand Valley State captured the team trophy with a 854 (283, 287, 284), while Joel Sylven from UMSL won medalist accolades with a 206 (67, 71, 68).  The top Green & Gold performer was Matt Pelak (Mattawan, Mich.) who carded a 216 (72, 70, 74), which was tied-for-12th.  It was a career-best score for three rounds for the redshirt sophomore plus its his best finish of the season.

TEAM RESULTS
The Lakers topped Findlay (855) by a stroke, while UMSL (864) was third.  UIndy placed fourth with an 865 and Trevecca Nazarene (867) was fifth.  The Warriors edged out Ferris State (876) and Tiffin (876) plus Hillsdale (877) and Northwood (881).

WSU RESULTS
Mat Hawryluk (Chatham, Ont.) tied-for-25th with a 218 (73, 71, 74), while Sean Niles (Northville, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central) posted a 220 (71, 71, 78).

Josh DiCarlo (Amherstburg, Ont.) finished with a 223 (76, 75, 72) and Garret Day (Chatham, Ont.) rounded out the squad with a 224 (75, 72, 77).

COACH HORN'S RECAP
"The Warriors battled through some challenging weather.  Matt Pelak played very solid during the 54-hole event.  Mat Hawryluk was solid as well.  Sean Niles played two fantastic rounds but struggled bringing it home.  Josh DiCarlo and Garret Day both carded 72s during the event.  We're not where we want to be just yet, but we are not very far off.  We have to clean up a few critical mistakes and certainly improve our putting.  We simply didn't make enough birdies during the three rounds.  After we made a run in the second round we moved into second place but then failed to keep the momentum as the birdies dried up and flew away."

UP NEXT
The Warriors will be a part of the field at the Ohio Dominican Bill Blazer Memorial in Urbana, Ohio on April 9-10.
