Women's Swimming and Diving Sets School Record With 20 Academic All-GLIAC Honorees

Program breaks mark for Excellence recipients with 16.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's swimming and diving program had a school-record 20 GLIAC All-Academic recipients. In addition, the Warriors shattered the previous mark of 10 All-Academic Excellence honorees, set three times previously (2015-16, 2019-20 and 2020-21), with 16 All-Academic Excellence recipients, which was tops in the GLIAC. The 20 total honorees ranked second in the league. The women's swimming and diving program has had 164 Academic All-GLIAC honorees over the last 11 years.

Criteria states the student-athlete must be an active member on the roster at the end of the season, and not a freshman or a first-year transfer student.

Named to the GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Team for maintaining a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.5 were graduate student Jia Yi Koh (Subana Jaya, Malaysia), seniors Ashleigh Allen (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Clarkston), Sydney Balk (Farmington, Mich.) and Julia Brunner (Traverse City, Mich. / St. Francis), juniors Hannah Cooper (Ortonville, Mich. / Brandon), Jordan Fox (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia) and Marissa Woida (Lincoln Park, Mich. / Wyandotte Roosevelt), along with sophomores Justine Czyrka (Northville, Mich.), Hannah Gurecki (Macomb, Mich. / L'Anse Creuse North), Darina Malinova (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Warren Mott), Peyton Michalski (White Lake, Mich. / Lakeland), Barbara Munoz (Yumbo, Colombia), Isidora Sekaric (Windsor, Ont. / W.F. Herman Academy), Mikaela Senkus (Macomb, Mich. / Utica Academy for International Studies), Megan Sieloff (Grand Blanc, Mich.), and Juliana Witt (Macomb Twp., Mich. / Dakota).

Koh (Master's in Exercise and Sport Science) was on the All-Academic Excellence squad for the fourth consecutive season. Allen (Marketing), Balk (Kinesiology) and Brunner (Romance Languages) garnered their third straight All-Academic Excellence Team recognition. Fox (Accounting) and Woida (Nursing) notched their second consecutive All-Academic Excellence honor. Cooper (Secondary Education) was eligible for the first time after transferring from Cleveland State in January of 2021. Czyrka (Marketing), Gurecki (Sociology), Malinova (Exercise and Sport Science), Michalski (Psychology), Munoz (Management), Sekaric (Chemistry), Senkus (Civil Engineering), Sieloff (Exercise and Sport Science), and Witt (Environmental Science) are recipients in their first season eligible.

Wayne State had four representatives on the All-Academic Team for having a cumulative GPA between 3.0 and 3.49. This group consisted of juniors Maddy Chorley (Burton, Mich. / Davison), Marina Tarlev (Athens, Greece), and Abby Warner (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Eisenhower), along with sophomore Amelia Plonis (Macomb, Mich. / Utica Eisenhower).

Chorley (Criminal Justice), Tarlev (Mechanical Engineering) and Warner (Marketing) were recognized for the second straight year, while Plonis (pre-Physical Therapy) is a recipient in her first season eligible.
