Max Leppelmeier Posts Historic Day at Findlay Country Club

The sophomore is in first place with a 131 (66, 65) with one more round to play.

FINDLAY, Ohio -- The Wayne State University men's golf program was back in action on Monday at the Doc Spragg Fall Invitational.  The Warriors shot a 560 (282, 278) and are in tied-for-second place with 18 holes to play, just one stroke behind the leader.  The 54-hole event is being played at the Findlay Country Club (Par 72 / 6,747 Yards).

LEADING THE WAY
Max Leppelmeier (Wauseon, Ohio / Pettisville) had a historic day on the course and sits atop the leaderboard after day one with a 131 (66, 65).  His second-round score of 65 matches the program record for 18 holes, done only once before by Tyler LaSerra on Oct. 23, 2012.  The sophomore posted a 66 during the opening round, which matches the second-lowest 18-hole total in program history.  He becomes the sixth Warriors to post that score and the first since Brendan Seys shot a 66 on Sept. 28, 2019.

The 36-hole tally of 131 is four strokes better than the program record for 36 holes.

In the second round, Leppelmeier recorded an eagle on the fourth hole and collected five birdies, including three straight on holes 13-15.  He is two strokes better than GVSU's Charles Delong.

TEAM RESULTS
Grand Valley State has the lowest team score at 559 (282, 277), while WSU is tied with UMSL, which carded a 560 (277, 283).  Behind the Warriors are Findlay (561), Ashland (572) and UIndy (574).

WSU RESULTS
Josh DiCarlo (Amherstburg, Ont. / General Amherst) is tied-for-sixth with a 139 (71, 68).  He notched six birdies in the second round, including four consecutive.

Luke Pelak (Mattawan, Mich.) carded a 144 (74, 70), while Garret Day (Chatham, Ont. / Ursuline College Chatham) shot a 147 (71, 76).

Tyler Hurtubise (Essex, Ont. / Essex District) rounded out the starting lineup with a 149 (74, 75).

The Green & Gold had six rounds under par on Monday.  Two by Leppelmeier and DiCarlo and one each from Day and Pelak.

COACH HORN'S THOUGHTS
"We worked on putting very aggressively in the last week and it definitely paid off today.  Our lag putting was substantially better.  Excellent round by Josh and Luke in the second 18.  Garret and Tyler battled all day.  And Max Leppelmeier had a day today!  In the 100+ years of Wayne State Golf, this is the single best day a Warrior has ever posted!  He tied the single round school record and went bogey free for 36 holes while shooting 13 under par. The best day ever by a warrior golfer!"

FROM MAX LEPPELMEIER
"Conditions were perfect today and the field is full of great teams so today was a great day to set ourselves up to be in contention for first when in comes down to the final round.  A few of us really took advantage of the course today and we had a great first day."
UP NEXT
The Green & Gold will finish the tournament on Tuesday morning with tee times starting at 9:00 AM.
