Men's Golf Near Top of Leaderboard After Opening Round

The Warriors are competing in the NCAA Super Regional Preview in Winona, Minn.

WINONA, Minn. -- At the site of the NCAA Super Regionals, which will be held on May 11-13, the Wayne State University men's golf program began its season on Tuesday at The Bridges (Par 71 / 6,804 Yards). The Warriors are tied-for-fifth in the 14-team field with a 298.

LEADING THE WAY
Max Leppelmeier (Wauseon, Ohio / Pettisville) was WSU's top performer on day one with a round of 72 and is tied-for-fourth with 18 holes remaining. Marcus Belka of Minnesota State, Cade Uhlenhake of Washburn and Daniel Robles Delval from Rogers State all shot 71s to share the lead.

TEAM RESULTS
The Green & Gold are within striking distance of first place with a score of 298. Minnesota State posted a 293, while Washburn and Winona State had scores of 294. Central Missouri notched a 296, while Wayne State is tied with Missouri Western State at 298.

WSU RESULTS
Josh DiCarlo (Amherstburg, Ont. / General Amherst) carded a 74 and is tied-for-20th, while Tyler Hurtubise (Essex, Ont. / Essex District) is tied-for-25th with a 75.

Both Matt Pelak (Mattawan, Mich. / Mattawan) and Luke Pelak (Mattawan, Mich. / Mattawan) finished the first 18 holes with matching rounds of 77.

The Warriors had three compete as individuals led by Garret Day (Chatham, Ont. / Ursuline College Chatham), who is tied-for-12th with a 73. Ian Smith (Canton, Mich. / Plymouth) posted a 78, while Mat Hawryluk (Chatham, Ont. / Ursuline College Chatham) collected an 85.
