Men's Tennis Enters Spring Season Top 25 In ITA Preseason Coaches Poll

The Warriors sit fifth in the nation.

DETROIT -- After a historic season which saw a 26-5 overall record, a GLIAC Championship, and a national runner-up finish in the NCAA Tournament, the Wayne State University men's tennis team received recognition from its peers. The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) released their Preseason Top 25 Coaches Poll on Friday, and the Warriors were ranked as the #5 squad in the nation.

The 2022 spring season began with WSU running the table for a 7-0 record in GLIAC play, followed by a conference championship after defeating Davenport and Grand Valley State in Midland, Mich. The Warriors then rattled off five wins over Lewis, Grand Valley State (for a second time), Southern New Hampshire, five-ranked Embry-Riddle, and top-ranked Columbus State to reach the national championship finals against Barry, where they lost 4-1.

Wayne State will look to make another deep run into the postseason, and are bringing back a number of key members from that 2021-22 squad. Of the six athletes that competed in the NCAA Division II championship match against Barry, five are returning for another season. They include sophomore Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany), junior Daniel Grey (Wiesbaden, Germany), graduate student Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany), redshirt junior Luke Laws (Sunderland, England), and redshirt junior Dom Spicer (London, England).

Defending champion Barry is the top-ranked school heading into the 2023 season. Columbus State, Saint Leo, Flagler, and Wayne State round out the top five.

The new season for the Warriors begins on February 3, with WSU playing a pair of matches vs. Northwood (10 a.m.) and Lawrence Tech (4 p.m.).
