Men's Fencing Picks Up Victory at Philadelphia Invitational

WSU defeated NYU in Round 3, 14-13.

PHILADELPHIA, PENN. -- The Wayne State University men's fencing squad participated in the Philadelphia Invitational on Sunday. The Warriors began the day with losses to Princeton (22-5) and Penn (15-12), before defeating NYU 14-13 in the third round. WSU then fell to Yale (17-10) and St. John's (21-6) to close out the day.

EPEE RESULTS
Redshirt senior Ahmed Elsayed (Tanta, Gharbia, Egypt) won 12 of his 15 bouts while also helping the Warriors to a third round victory over NYU with his strong performance.

Freshman Sam Garrett (San Francisco, Calif.) went 7-7, while senior Ramadan Dinkins (Chicago, Ill.) had a 5-7 mark for the afternoon.

Also competing in the category was freshman George Varin (Perm, Russia), going 1-3 with a win over Penn's Dennis Fleysh in the second round.

FOIL RESULTS
Senior Quinlyn Morgan (Olathe, Kan.) and senior Skylar Pitcher (Middleville, Mich.) both finished 5-10 in the category.

Freshman Mitchell Gatrell (Livonia, Mich.) went 2-7, while sophomore Bobbie Hirsch (Huntington Woods, Mich.) competed in six bouts and went 0-6.

SABRE RESULTS
Sophomore Eyad Marouf (Alexandria, Egypt) won nine of the 10 bouts taken by Wayne State in the category. His overall total was 9-6.

Freshman Jacob Bloom (Redford, Mich.) went 1-14 with his victory coming over Yale's Jack Pan.

Freshman Cameron King (Laurel, Md.) (0-9) and freshman Bryce Heim (Oconomowoc, Wis.) (0-6) also competed. For both, this was their first action in the sabre category. They had previously competed in the epee.

Wayne State travels to South Bend, Ind., to compete in Notre Dame's DeCicco Duals on Saturday, January 28.
