Men's Fencing Finishes 5-2 at DeCicco Duals

The Warriors won their last four rounds after starting the afternoon 1-2.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The Wayne State University men's fencing team had a successful day at Notre Dame's DeCicco Duals on Saturday, finishing with a 5-2 mark. They defeated Detroit Mercy (27-0), Florida (18-9), Denison (21-6), Lawrence (18-9) and Northwestern (24-3) while losing to host Notre Dame (20-7) and Cleveland State in a close battle (15-12).

EPEE RESULTS
The duo of freshmen Bryce Heim (Oconomowoc, Wis.) and George Varin (Perm, Russia) led the way in the epee, with Heim going 13-3 and Varin tallying an 11-2 mark. They each went 3-0 in their three bouts against Detroit Mercy and Denison, helping the Warriors to victories in those rounds.

Freshman Cameron King (Laurel, Md.) had a solid 8-4 record in the category, while redshirt senior Ahmed Elsayed (Tanta, Gharbia, Egypt) finished the day 4-1.

Senior Ramadan Dinkins (Chicago, Ill.) had a 4-3 mark.

Freshman Sam Garrett (San Francisco, Calif.) went 1-6, with the victory coming over Notre Dame's Spencer Vermeule.

FOIL RESULTS
Each of Wayne State's four student-athletes in the foil finished over .500, with senior Skylar Pitcher (Middleville, Mich.) claiming over 10 bout wins (11-2).

Sophomore Bobbie Hirsch (Huntington Woods, Mich.) and freshman Mitchell Gatrell (Livonia, Mich.) each had eight victories. Hirsch went 8-2 while Gatrell had an 8-6 mark.

Senior Quinlyn Morgan (Olathe, Kan.) went 7-4 for the afternoon.

SABRE RESULTS
Sophomore Eyad Marouf (Alexandria, Egypt) had a stellar 15-2 mark for the day, earning nearly the majority of sabre points for WSU.

Garrett (3-4 in the sabre), Varin (1-2), King (0-6), and Elsayed (1-0) pulled double duty as all four competed in both the epee and the sabre categories.

Jacob Bloom (Redford, Mich) also competed as the freshman claimed wins over Greg Swanney of Detroit Mercy in the first round and Florida's John Ballou in the fourth round.

Wayne State travels to Evanston, Ill. for the Northwestern Duals on Saturday, February 4 and Sunday, February 5.
