Men's Fencing Garners Third Place Finish in Saturday's Central Collegiate Fencing Championships

The Warriors finished 2-2 in the team competition.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Wayne State University men's fencing squad earned a third-place finish in the team portion of the Central Collegiate Fencing Championships on Saturday inside the French Field House. The Warriors went 2-2 for the day, with victories over Detroit Mercy (27-0) and Lawrence (17-10) but falling to Cleveland State (15-12) and Ohio State (22-5). 

The Green and Gold placed second in the epee with an overall tally of 22-14 (behind Ohio State) and third in the foil with a record of 22-14.

EPEE RESULTS
Sam Garrett (San Francisco, Calif.) picked up a 7-2 record in the epee, finishing the afternoon with matching 3-0 bout records against Detroit Mercy and Lawrence. 

Bryce Heim (Oconomowoc, Wis.) had went 6-2, including a 2-1 mark over Cleveland State opponents to help the Warrior go 7-2 in the weapon against the Vikings. 

Ramadan Dinkins (Chicago, Ill.) and George Varin (Perm, Russia) recorded matching 3-4 records. Dinkins went 2-0 against Cleveland State, while Varin grabbed all three of his bout victories against CSU. 

Also participating and putting together a solid showing was Cameron King (Laurel, Md.), as he posted three triumphs over the Titans and finished 3-2 in the weapon. 

FOIL RESULTS
Two Warriors in the foil registered a 5-4 mark, with Skylar Pitcher (Middleville, Mich.) and Quinlyn Morgan (Olathe, Kan.) each back on the strip after not participating in the most recent competition at Notre Dame. 

Securing a 3-6 record was Bobbie Hirsch (Huntington Woods, Mich.), the other WSU member competing in the weapon. The sophomore ended the team portion on a high note, going 3-0 against Oliver Reece, Eli Levitas-Goren, and Donovin Brown from Lawrence.

SABRE RESULTS
Eyad Marouf (Alexandria, Egypt) carried the torch for Wayne State in the sabre, earning seven of the 17 bout wins in the category. He finished the day at 7-3. 

Garrett (1-2), Heim (1-2), Varin (1-0), and King (0-3) all competed in the sabre as well. Garrett earned his victory over Cleveland State, while Varin received his over Detroit Mercy's George Swanney. 

Heim defeated Avin Ral of Ohio State in the third round. The Buckeyes were the CCFC overall winners. 

Also participating was Jacob Bloom (Redford, Mich.). He went 1-9, with the win coming over Swanney of Detroit Mercy.

The individual portion of the Central Collegiate Championships are slated for Sunday from the French Field House.
