Several Men's Fencers Compete in Individual Portion of Central Collegiate Fencing Championships

Marouf places first in the sabre, while Pitcher finished second place in the foil.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Several members of the Wayne State University men's fencing team competed in the individual portion of the Central Collegiate Fencing Championships on Sunday afternoon inside the French Field House. The day was highlighted by a first-place overall finish for Eyad Marouf (Alexandria, Egypt) in the men's sabre, and a second-place overall finish for Skylar Pitcher (Middleville, Mich.) in the men's foil.

SABRE
Marouf finished 5-1 in pool play, securing a spot in the eight-person single elimination table as the two-seed. He went on to post a 15-5 win over Cleveland State's Mason Moskowitz in the round of eight, before defeating Nolan Williams, 15-6, to earn a spot in the final round. There, the sophomore would face another Buckeyes' opponent in top-seeded Jack Price, and would be victorious by a 15-13 score to win the category.

Jacob Bloom (Redford, Mich.) also participated and went 0-6 in pool play for a 13th-place finish.

FOIL
Pitcher recorded a 3-3 record in the first round of pool play in the weapon and advanced to the second round. The senior then went 2-1 to become one of eight to advance to the single-elimination table (as a seven-seed). After nipping a 15-13 victory over Justin Vogler of Ohio State, the foilist once again pulled out a close win in the semifinals, 15-14, against OSU's Diego Cervantes. Pitcher's run would end there, as he was upended by another Buckeye in the final round, top-ranked Solin Li, by a 15-11 margin to grab second on the podium.

Also competing in pool play were Quinlyn Morgan (Olathe, Kan.) and Bobbie Hirsch (Huntington Woods, Mich.). Morgan racked up a 1-4 record, while Hirsch went 0-6. They finished 12th and 13th, respectfully.

EPEE
Five Warriors were in the epee category, including Sam Garrett (San Francisco, Calif.), Ramadan Dinkins (Chicago, Ill.), Cameron King (Laurel, Md.), Bryce Heim (Oconomowoc, Wis.), and George Varin (Perm, Russia).

Garrett (3-2 in the first pool round), Dinkins (3-2), Heim (3-1), and Varin (3-1) all advanced as far as the second pool round. Garrett finished tied-for-10th on the afternoon after compiling a 5-5 mark, while Dinkins ended up 12th with the same record. Varin's 5-4 effort put him 13th overal, and Heim placed 16th overall (4-5).

King would go 1-4 in the first pool round and would wind up 19th.

Wayne State will look ahead to NCAA Championship time, beginning with the Midwest Regional on Saturday. March 11, at Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Ill.
