Men's Fencing Kicks Off Weekend at Northwestern Duals

The Warriors defeated Northwestern in the second round for their sole victory of the day.

EVANSTON, Ill. -- The Wayne State University men's fencing squad went 1-4 in the first day of action at the Northwestern Duals on Saturday inside the Ryan Fieldhouse. The Warriors defeated Northwestern (18-7, plus two double forfeits) to start the day off strong, before receiving losses to challenging opponents in Incarnate Word (19-8), UC San Diego (19-8), Air Force (18-9) and Cleveland State (17-10).

EPEE RESULTS
The Warriors had their best showing in the epee category during day one, with five fencers finishing a combined 24-21.

Leading the way was freshman Bryce Heim (Oconomowoc, Wis.) with a mark of 9-6. He went a perfect 3-0 over Northwestern opponents in round two and scored at least one bout victory in each of the five matches.

Next, senior Ramadan Dinkins (Chicago, Ill.) finished the afternoon 6-5, also grabbing at least one bout victory in each round.

Freshmen Cameron King (Laurel, Md.) and Sam Garrett (San Francisco, Calif.) each had identical records of 3-2. Garrett finished a spotless 2-0 in his epee matches over the Air Force Academy's George Gasparovich IV and Siddhant Padhye.

Finally, freshman George Varin (Perm, Russia) also competed in the category, finishing 3-6.

FOIL RESULTS
Sophomore Bobbie Hirsch (Huntington Woods, Mich.) and freshman Mitchell Gatrell (Livonia, Mich.) were the two foilists for Wayne State.

Gatrell went 6-7 on the day, including two victories over opponents from Cleveland State.

Hirsch finished the afternoon with a 2-11 mark, defeating Northwestern's Andrew Swanson and Incarnate Word's Nolan Chez.

SABRE RESULTS
Day one saw continued strong play by sophomore Eyad Marouf (Alexandria, Egypt), who finished 12-2 in the sabre. The mark was a team-best and Marouf scored 12 of the 17 bout wins for WSU in the weapon.

Freshman Jacob Bloom (Redford, Mich.) went 1-13 for the afternoon.

Garrett (2-4), Varin (0-2) and King (0-6) double-dipped and competed in the sabre as well as the epee. Garrett was strong in round seven against Cleveland State opponents, beating both Conner Bailey and Travis Kroggel to have a solid finish to the first day of action.

UP NEXT
After Wayne State finishes their weekend in Evanston on Sunday, February 5, they will not see action again until the weekend of February 25 and 26, where they will compete in the Central Collegiate Fencing Championships in Columbus.
