CALABASH, N.C. -- The Wayne State University men's golf team played its first tournament of the spring this weekend, the Davis & Elkins' Battle at Brunswick at Brunswick Plantation Golf Course. The Warriors finished second among 14 teams and were paced by
Josh DiCarlo (Amherstburg, Ont. / General Amherst) in a two-way tie for second.
Wayne State shot a two-day score of 594 (+18), just one stroke off Davis & Elkins' lead, and improved its mark by 14 strokes from day one to day two, 304 to 290. That 14-stroke improvement was the best of any team competing. At the top of that 594 was DiCarlo's one-over 145 (75-70).
DiCarlo wasn't the only Warrior among the top 10 as he was joined there by
Mat Hawryluk's (Chatham, Ont. / Ursuline College Chatham) three-over 147 (73-74) in a tie for fourth and
Max Leppelmeier's (Wauseon, Ohio / Pettisville) six-over 150 (79-71) in a tie for eighth. Just outside that top 10 for WSU was
Garret Day (Chatham, Ont. / Ursuline College Chatham) in a tie for 11th with an eight-over 152 (77-75) while
Tyler Hurtubise (Essex, Ont. / Essex District) placed in a tie for 39th with a 15-over 159 (82-77).
Aside from those five competitors, Wayne State sent four more student-athletes to compete as individuals. Those four included
Ian Smith (Canton, Mich. / Plymouth) in a tie for 16th (+10, 154, 73-81),
Luke Pelak (Mattawan, Mich. / Mattawan) in a tie for 20th (+11, 155, 75-80),
Adam Burghardt (New Baltimore, Mich. / Warren De La Salle) in a tie for 24th (+12, 156, 82-74), and
Alex Saroli (LaSalle, Ont. / Holy Names)in a tie for 42nd (+16, 160, 78-82).
Next up on the schedule, Wayne State will play in SVSU's Spring Invitational on March 18-19 at Kearney Hill Golf Links in Lexington, Ky.
