Elsayed and Marouf Finish Fencing Season After Day Two of NCAA Championships

Elsayed recorded nine bout victories in the epee, while Marouf had six victories in the sabre.

DURHAM, N.C. -- Representing the Wayne State University men's fencing program at the 2023 NCAA Fencing Championships, Ahmed Elsayed (Tanta, Gharbia, Egypt) and Eyad Marouf (Alexandria, Egypt) finished their two-day event by each recording a pair of bout victories on Friday inside Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Elsayed finished in 16th place overall in the men's epee category, totaling a 9-14 record for the two days.  He went 2-6 on Friday, which consisted of rounds four and five and wrapped up round robin play.  The redshirt senior defeated both of his opponents, Theodore Vinnitchouk of Yale and Isaac Herbst of Penn State, by a score of 5-4 and posted a +1 touch differential (79-78) after all 23 bouts. 

The Warrior completed his third trip to the NCAA Championships for the Green and Gold, previously recording a tied-for-third finish in 2019 and a tied-for-11th place effort in 2022. 

Competing in the men's sabre, Marouf was at his first NCAA Championships.  He was 19th overall for the weapon after tallying a 6-15 record through all five rounds.  The sophomore went 2-5 on day two, not having the opportunity to compete in the eighth bout due to Darren Yen (NYU) withdrawing from round robin action. 

Marouf defeated Inigo Rivera of Boston College (5-1) and Christopher Walker of Columbia (5-3) in his two victories on the afternoon.  He registered a touch differential of -21 (67-88) for the competition.

Neither fencer made it to the semifinal that consisted of 15-touch bouts to determine the winners of each weapon. Coming in first place overall was Luke Linder of Notre Dame in the men's sabre, while Jonas Hansen of Harvard was the men's epee champion. Mohamed Elsayed Saleh, the younger brother of Ahmed, made it to the bracket as the top seed in the epee, but fell to four-seed Paul Veltrup of Ohio State. 

Wayne State ranked in 17th place after the men's competition, with 15 bout wins in total. 

While the men's championship is in the books, the 2023 NCAA Fencing Championships (hosted by Duke University) are not over.  The women's championships will be played in Durham on Saturday and Sunday.
