INDIANAPOLIS -- Paced by a trio of top-four finishes, the Wayne State University women's swimming and diving team picked up 51 points in Wednesday's finals of the NCAA Championships. With 75 total points, the Warriors are in sixth place out of 27 teams heading into Thursday morning's preliminary session.
Starting with
Mikaela Senkus (Macomb, Mich. / Utica Academy for International Studies), she was the runner-up (First Team All-American) in the one meter with 470.95 points, just 2.6 points behind the National Champion, Luna Vejarano of Clarion. Friday afternoon, Senkus will dive in the three meter prelims for a chance at that night's finals.
Wayne State's two other top-four placings for the night came in the 1000 free from
Jordan Fox (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia / Mentone Grammar) in second (9:53.61 - First Team All-American) and
Alli Vassilakos (Clarkston, Mich. / Clarkston) in fourth (9:55.99 - First Team All-American).
Those two were joined by prelim competitors,
Barbara Munoz (Yumbo, Colombia / Comfandi Yumbo) in 15th (10:10.04 - Honorable Mention All-American) and
Megan Sieloff (Grand Blanc, Mich. / Grand Blanc) in 21st (10:14.80).
The Warriors' final event of the day was the 200 medley relay with the team of
Elly Belmore (St. Clair Shores, Mich. / Lakeview),
Hannah Gurecki (Macomb, Mich. / L'Anse Creuse North),
Evie Dice (Waterford, Mich. / Clarkston), and
Sabine Branford (Plymouth, Mich. / Salem). Those four touched the wall in 18th with a mark of 1:44.94.
