Men's Golf Finishes as Runner-Up in GLIAC Medal Match Play Championship

Results:  Semifinals | Finals

AUGUSTA, Mich. -- After placing second in Friday's stroke play portion of the GLIAC Championships, the Wayne State University men's golf team moved on to Saturday's medal match play. WSU defeated Ferris State in the semifinals, 3-1-1, before falling to Grand Valley State in the finals, 5-0.

"What a battle," said head coach, Mike Horn. "We fought hard and played well against Ferris State this morning, who has vastly improved and quickly. We held the lead in the first nine holes against Grand Valley, but made a few mistakes between holes eight and 12, which cost us. Congratulations to Grand Valley on a well-earned conference championship. I think the experience will help us going forward and will be a large asset going to Minnesota for the NCAA Super Regional if we qualify. Good play by all the guys. Having a lead in the beginning of the finals was very good, but sadly we weren't able to finish it off."

Next up is the NCAA Midwest/Central Super Regional on May 11-13 in Winona, Minn. The top 10 teams in the region will qualify and the Warriors, who were ranked sixth in the most recent rankings, will find out on Friday, April 28 if they've made the field.

Starting with the win over Ferris State, Wayne State's Max Leppelmeier (Wauseon, Ohio / Pettisville), Adam Burghardt (New Baltimore, Mich. / Warren De La Salle) and Mat Hawryluk (Chatham, Ont. / Ursuline College Chatham) won their matchups while Josh DiCarlo (Amherstburg, Ont. / General Amherst) played to a tie and Tyler Hurtubise (Essex, Ont. / Essex District) dropped his.

DiCarlo fired a 66 to lead the Warriors. Leppelmeier and Hawryluk each shot a 69 while Burghardt and Hurtubise each carded a 72. In the finals, the Warriors' scores were as follows:  DiCarlo - 70, Leppelmeier - 71, Burghardt - 73, Hurtubise - 74, and Hawryluk - 76.

Wayne State is looking to play in the NCAA Regionals for the 13th time in the last 16 seasons it was held.
