URBANA, Ohio -- The Wayne State University men's golf team won Ohio Dominican's Bill Blazer Memorial Tournament on Friday and Saturday at the Urbana Country Club. The Warriors did so in a 14-team field while their second five-man group finished in seventh. The top team shot a 585 (+9, 289-296) and the other squad carded a 599 (+23, 297-302).
"We're starting to show signs of consistency," said head coach,
Mike Horn. "Congratulations to Mat (Hawryluk), Josh (DiCarlo) and Garret (Day) on their tied-for-ninth finish. Adam (Burghardt), otherwise known as Bergie, had a fantastic debut in the lineup. Conor (Spencer) also had a solid debut in his first time traveling. We're starting to execute a little bit better at the right time and I'm really proud of this crew. They're working really hard too. Go Warriors."
Individually, three Warriors tied for ninth with a two-over 146, including
Josh DiCarlo (Amherstburg, Ont. / General Amherst), 73-73,
Garret Day (Chatham, Ont. / Ursuline College Chatham), 72-74, and
Mat Hawryluk (Chatham, Ont. / Ursuline College Chatham), 71-75.
Those three were joined in the top 25 by
Tyler Hurtubise (Essex, Ont. / Essex District) in a tie for 19th with a four-over 148 (72-76),
Luke Pelak (Mattawan, Mich. / Mattawan) in a tie for 22nd with a five-over 149 (77-72) and
Adam Burghardt (New Baltimore, Mich. / Warren De La Salle) in a tie for 22nd as well (73-76).
Also getting onto the course for WSU were
Max Leppelmeier (Wauseon, Ohio / Pettisville) in a tie for 30th with a six-over 150 (78-72),
Matt Pelak (Mattawan, Mich. / Mattawan) in a tie for 34th with a seven-over 151 (75-76),
Alex Saroli (LaSalle, Ont. / Holy Names) in a tie for 45th with a nine-over 153 (73-80), and
Conor Spencer (Jackson, Mich. / Lumen Christi) in a tie for 71st with a 17-over 161 (78-83).
Next up on the schedule is the postseason and the GLIAC Championships. They'll be played on Friday-Sunday, April 14-16 at Stoatin Brae Golf Course in Augusta, Mich. The event will be played at that course for the third time in as many seasons as the Warriors placed fifth in 2021 and sixth in 2022.
