Former Sabreist Elsissy Places Third At World Championships

MILAN, Italy -- Former Wayne State University fencer Ziad Elsissy placed third at the 2023 World Championships held this past weekend.

Elsissy, who fenced for the Warriors from 2014 through 2018, was a two-time national runner-up and a two-time CoSIDA At-Large Academic All-American (First Team in 2017 and Second Team in 2018).

He was ranked No. 12 by the FIE (International Fencing Federation) and was able to bypass the pool competition as one of the top 16 seeds.

In the direct elimination portion of the competition, Elsissy began with a 15-7 victory over Iceland's Andri Nikolaysson Mateev in the round of 64.  He defeated Romania's Matei Cidu, 15-11, in the round of 32.

Elsissy edged Hungary's Tamas Decsi, 15-13, in the round of 16, before posting a 15-14 triumph over Italy's Michele Gallo in the quarterfinals.  Gallo entered the event ranked No. 14 in the world.

In the semifinals, Elsissy fell 15-14 to the top-ranked sabreist in the world, Georgia's Sandro Bazadze.

During his collegiate career at WSU, Elsissy recorded seven semesters with at least a 3.5 term GPA as a Mechanical Engineering major.  He notched a 49-24 record at the NCAA Championships when combining round robin competition along with the semifinals and finals.  Elsissy did not compete at the NCAA Championships in 2016 as he opted to participate in a Grand Prix event in Seoul, Korea.
