Men's Fencing Notches Two Wins at Detroit Mercy's Titan Invitational

The Warriors won both matches they competed in on Sunday.

DETROIT, Mich. -- The Wayne State University men's fencing squad began its 2024 team campaign at Detroit Mercy's Titan Invitational on Sunday inside Calihan Hall.  The Warriors finished 2-0 for the day with victories over the University of Michigan (16-11) and the host Titans from UDM (19-8).

EPEE RESULTS
Four Wayne State epeeists combined for a 10-5 overall record (3-0 team mark) across the two matches.  The quartet was led by sophomore Shuayb Dinkins (Kissimmee, Fla. / Lincoln Park/Celebration) and his perfect 5-0 record across the pair of rounds.

Fellow sophomore Sam Garrett (San Francisco, Calif. / San Francisco School of the Arts) went 2-1 over his competitors from the Wolverines, while Bryce Heim (Oconomowoc, Wis.) tallied a 1-1 bout total against Detroit Mercy.  Heim, a second-year fencer, secured his bout win over Ethan Popp.

The fourth Warrior in the epee was sophomore Cameron King (Laurel, Md. / DeMatha Catholic).  He posted a 2-3 total mark in the weapon, including a victory over Popp from UDM.

FOIL RESULTS
All records from the Warriors in the foil came against the University of Michigan, as Detroit Mercy sent no foilists to the strip.

Junior Bobbie Hirsch (Huntington Woods, Mich. / International Academy/Berkley) and sophomore Mitchell Gatrell (Livonia, Mich. / Churchill) each went a perfect 3-0 over their opponents from UM.  Freshman Sam Gneuhs (Mason, Ohio / William Mason), in his first NCAA-sanctioned collegiate event, earned a 1-2 bout ledger.  His win came vs. the Wolverines' Alex Constantine.

SABRE RESULTS
The lone member of the Green and Gold in the sabre category was Eyad Marouf (Alexandria, Egypt).  The junior recorded a spotless effort in finishing 6-0 on Sunday.

Marouf secured the most individual bout victories of any Warriors men's fencer competing inside Calihan Hall.
