Men's Fencing Tallies 5-1 Ledger at DeCicco Duals

The Warriors won their last four dual matches on Saturday at Notre Dame.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The Wayne State University men's fencing squad posted a 5-1 overall mark at Notre Dame's DeCicco Duals inside Castellan Family Fencing Center on Saturday afternoon.  The Warriors lost to the host Fighting Irish team 18-9, but rebounded to win all five other contests against Detroit Mercy (20-7), Cleveland State (14-13), Florida (16-11), Lawrence (16-11), and Northwestern (20-5 with two double forfeits).

"The team had a good weekend. I was very pleased with how the team fenced and supported each other throughout the day.  Overall, I think everyone stepped up their game from last weekend to this weekend.  We are looking forward to our strongest meet of the season at Northwestern next weekend," said head coach Andy Tulleners.

EPEE RESULTS
Five different Warriors competed in the epee, and all had a bout total that was over .500 for the day.

Leading the group with eight wins each in the weapon on Saturday were sophomore Sam Garrett (San Francisco, Calif. / San Francisco School of the Arts) and sophomore Bryce Heim (Oconomowoc, Wis.).  Garrett's record for the afternoon was 8-3, while Heim went 8-2.  Both had perfect 3-0 rounds against Lawrence and Northwestern, respectively.

Redshirt senior Ramadan Dinkins (Chicago, Ill. / GCE Lab School) competed in his first event of 2023-24 and finished with a mark of 7-4.  That total included a 3-0 second round against a strong Notre Dame squad, which helped WSU win the weapon 6-3 against the hosts.

Ramadan's brother Shuayb Dinkins (Kissimmee, Fla. / Lincoln Park/Celebration) also participated and ended the weekend 6-4.  The sophomore went undefeated against the three opponents from Cleveland State in Round 3.

Finishing with a strong 7-2 record was sophomore Cameron King (Laurel, Md. / DeMatha Catholic).  He collected a 2-0 mark against the Titans and a 3-0 ledger against the Wildcats.

FOIL RESULTS
The three foilists for the Green and Gold combined to muster a 30-16 record in five rounds, not including the first battle with Detroit Mercy as UDM sent no foilists to the mat.

Junior Bobbie Hirsch (Huntington Woods, Mich. / International Academy/Berkley) was in each round on Saturday.  He totaled a 9-6 record, while freshman Sam Gneuhs (Mason, Ohio / William Mason) was 6-5 for the day.

Sophomore Mitchell Gatrell (Livonia, Mich. / Churchill) saw his DeCicco Duals end at 8-4, with a spotless round against Florida.

In his opening team event at WSU, freshman Ethan Leung (Hong Kong) did not lose a bout.  He went 7-0 after not competing in the first two rounds and had a 6-0 mark in the final two contests of the afternoon for the Warriors.

SABRE RESULTS
The lone Warrior to compete in the sabre for the second straight event was junior Eyad Marouf (Alexandria, Egypt).  The former NCAA Championship competitor was impressive once again on Saturday, as he collected a 16-1 record.  His only defeat came against Notre Dame.
