DEARBORN, Mich. -- The Wayne State University men's golf team won its third event in a row on Tuesday for the first time since the 2019-20 season. The Warriors finished atop the leaderboard at their own Motor City Shakedown thanks to a two-day score of 567 (-9, 290-277), 10 strokes better than Saginaw Valley State in second place. WSU's 277 in round two is the squad's second-best 18-hole team score in the last 21 years, second only to a 274 set on Sept. 28, 2019 in round one of the WSU HawksHead Invitational.
Individually,
Tyler Hurtubise (Essex, Ont. / Essex District) took home the first individual title of his career among the field of 54 and fifth top-10 placing as a Warrior. Hurtubise carded a 140 (-4, 70-70), the lowest 36-hole total of his career, while the 70 is two shots off his personal best that he set in round three of Hillsdale's Get To Foundation Invitational on Sept. 17.
"I am almost at a loss for words," said head coach
Mike Horn. "What an outstanding comeback again today. The boys put the pedal to the metal and hit the gas today! Fantastic rounds from Matty Ice (
Mat Hawryluk),
Max Leppelmeier,
Josh Lahner and
Shawn Sehra. What an awesome way to pick up his first victory in college, congratulations to
Tyler Hurtubise on an outstanding two days with a four-under-par. We are definitely living dangerously by having to come back on the last day, but these guys have done it three tournaments in a row and now we stand at 30 and 0."
"Huge shout out to
Mo Makki,
Steve Booth and
Chad Johnson for helping bring the Warriors as well," added Horn. "Another win! Thanks to Marissa (Krynak), Lisa (Erickson) and Lydia (Lee) for helping with the event as well. What a great team victory on our home turf. We are going to get ready for Findlay in two weeks where we'll try to keep it going."
Right on the heels of the senior as the runner-up was redshirt senior
Josh DiCarlo (Amherstburg, Ont. / General Amherst), his second top-10 showing of the season and 11th of his illustrious career. DiCarlo did so with a 142 (-2, 70-72). Hurtubise and DiCarlo were joined in the top five by
Mat Hawryluk (Chatham, Ont. / Ursuline College Chatham) who tied-for-fifth with a 144 (E, 78-66). That 66 moved Hawryluk 30 spots up the individual rankings and is just one stroke off the program record for 18 holes.
The record of 65 was set twice previously including Tyler LaSerra in 2012 and matched by
Max Leppelmeier (Wauseon, Ohio / Pettisville) nearly a decade later.
In a tie-for-seventh, Leppelmeier rounded out the scoring for Wayne State's "A" group while firing a 145 (+1, 75-70). Leppelmeier ascended nine spots on day two, tied with
Josh Lahner (Roselle, Ill. / Lake Park) for the second-best improvement of any Warrior. Lahner shot a 147 (+3, 76-71) to tie-for-15th while the "A" team's sixth player in
Ian Smith (Canton, Mich. / Plymouth) tied-for-25th with a 150 (+6, 75-75).
All-Tournament Team (L to R): Peter Blazevic (Parkside), Josh DiCarlo (Wayne State), Mat Hawryluk (Wayne State), Tyler Hurtubise (Wayne State), Jiseung Choi (Saginaw Valley State), Arthur Ylitalo (Northern Michigan).
Switching gears, Wayne State's "B" team finished in eighth at 28 over (604, 306-298). That group consisted of the following six:
