SOUTH HAVEN, Mich. -- The No. 24 Wayne State University men's golf team won for the fifth time in six tournaments to close out the fall season on Sunday afternoon on the west side of the state. Playing at HawksHead Links Golf Course, the Warriors won their own HawksHead Invitational thanks to a two-round score of 565 (-11, 289-276).
WSU's 276 in round two is the squad's second-best 18-hole team score in the last 21 years, second only to a 274 set on Sept. 28, 2019 in round one of this same event.
"I am speechless as we came back for a fourth time this fall and pulled out a win with an amazingly superior round," said head coach
Mike Horn. "Congratulations to
Shawn Sehra as he achieved his first medalist honor in college. The coaching staff and the entire team is so happy and proud for Shawn as well as excellent play from
Andrew Daily. He continues his outstanding play from the last couple of weeks. And a fabulous round from
Max Leppelmeier today. I challenged the young Warriors on Friday to show me they are elite, and even though they fell short on Saturday, they made up for it and then some on Sunday to run away with the win. If these guys totally commit and continue to work hard over the winter, we could do things that Wayne State Golf has never done."
Individually and playing for Wayne State's "B" team,
Shawn Sehra (Windsor, Ont. / Academy 21 [Xavier]) claimed the first solo title of his career as coach Horn mentioned. Sehra carded a 36-hole mark of 139 (-5, four strokes off the program record) while firing a 66 in the second round, just one shot more than the school's all-time low.
