Fencing Program Represented at Fall Tournaments

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University Fencing Program had seven student-athletes compete individually in the fall. Six Warriors participated in the North American Cup with one more at the Bern World Cup.

The Warriors that competed were Bryce Heim (Oconomowoc, Wis.), Mitchell Gatrell (Livonia, Mich. / Churchill), Sam Gneuhs (Mason, Ohio / William Mason), Ethan Leung (Hong Kong / Yew Chung International School of Shanghai), Zeyad Nofal (Cairo, Egypt / Newcastle International School), Lance Miller (Freeport, Mich / Lowell), and Mahmoud Elsayed (Tanta, Gharbia, Egypt / El Nasr Official Language School).

Heim, Gatrell, Gneuhs, Leung, Nofal, and Miller all competed at the North American Cup, while Elsayed participated at the Bern World Cup.

Bryce Heim competed in both the Division I and Division II Men's Epee groups.  The junior notched a 3-3 record in pool play on the Division I side, falling in the table of 256 15-12 to Dylan French of Puerto Rico.  Heim saw success in the Division II group, claiming a 5-1 ledger in pool play and winning two bouts in the bracket, being defeated by William Lehr of the United States in a hard-fought 14-15 match.

Gatrell, Gneuhs, and Leung all competed in the Division I Men's Foil group.  Gatrell finished pool play with a record of 2-4 while Leung collected a 5-1 ledger as they both moved on to the bracket.  Gneuhs finished pool play 0-6, missing out on the bracket. 

Leung received a bye in the table of 256 but fell short in the table of 128, 10-15 to Anton Korablin.  Gatrell faced John Evan Snytsheuvel in the table of 256.  The warrior was defeated 15-7.

Zeyad Nofal entered the bracket stage with a 5-0 mark in pool play of the Division I Men's Saber group.  The redshirt freshman went 1-1 in the bracket, falling in the table of 64 to Triton Oh of Egypt, 15-10.

Lance Miller competed in the Junior Men's Epee group.  The freshman finished the day with a 0-6 record and did not move on to the bracket stage.

Sam Gneuhs returned to compete in the Division II Men's Foil group, earning a 3-2 mark heading into bracket play.  The sophomore claimed a table of 256 victory before being defeated in the following round 10-15 by Jaimin Vishawadia of the United States.

At the Bern World Cup, Elsayed went 8-2 overall, competing in the Men's Senior Epee Individual.

The Warrior won his first six preliminary round matches prior to falling to Jonathan Fuhrimann of Switzerland 3-2.  Elsayed was successful in bracket play, claiming victory in the table of 64 (15-14), the table of 32 (15-11), and the table of 16 (15-13) before being defeated in the table of eight with a score of 14-15.

The Wayne State fencing programs will return to action on Saturday, November 23, to compete at the NFC Championships hosted by Brown University.
