Elsayed Finishes Third at Junior World Cup

LAGOS, Nigeria -- Wayne State University men's fencing student-athlete Mahmoud Elsayed (Tanta, Gharbia, Egypt / El Nasr Official Language School) competed at the Lagos Junior World Cup on December 14th.

Elsayed compiled a 5-0 record in the preliminary rounds, finishing with a +13 touch differential (24-11), and securing the third seed heading into the direct elimination rounds.

The freshman won his first bout in the direct elimination, defeating Prude Joiela Aissi of Benin 15-7. In the round of 16, Elsayed claimed victory over Konstantinos Karampasis of Greece in a close 15-14 match. In the quarterfinals, the Warrior earned another win, this time 15-11 against Panagiotis Theodoropoulos (Greece).

Entering the semifinals, Elsayed was set to face Youssef Shamel of Egypt. Elsayed fell to the eventual champion Shamel, 15-13.

Following the event, Elsayed now ranks fifth in the world in juniors, and 76th in seniors.

Mahmoud Elsayed will appear at the Coupe Du Monde in Basel, Switzerland, on January 4 and 5. Fellow WSU fencing student-athletes Sam Garrett (San Francisco, Calif. / San Francisco School of the Arts), Ethan Leung (Hong Kong / Yew Chung International School of Shanghai [YCIS]), Zeyad Nofal (Cairo, Egypt / Newcastle International School), and Bryce Heim (Oconomowoc, Wis.) will all compete at the January North American Cup in Kansas City, Mo. from January 3-6.
